This decadent Chocolate Abbey Ale is a lovely trifle for your senses. Brewed with a proprietary Belgian yeast and English Maris Otter Malt it is smooth and rich. Inspired by a recent tour of Europe and brewed with chocolate we enjoyed there. Subtle Segal Ranch hops promote the rich dark chocolate flavors of this rather strong Dubbel. Best served at 48 °F. Pours a near opaque chocolate amber. Big pillowy light tan head - subsides gradually to a thinner lace cap. Big aroma of chocolate banana. Flavors of moderately middle dark chocolate and banana with faint hint of cloves. The moderate effervescents pushes the flavors throughout the palate. Medium body. The almost imperceptible hops eliminates the potential for over sweetness - a balanced finish. I much prefer this to the Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, which was a bit too sweet. This is a beer that needs the right context to excel, not a session beer (unless you’re a chocoholic) - after dinner with fresh oranges... But for a foodie, this is a great asset. Nicely crafted.

Bottle thanks to Sean, shared at the Homer "welcome to california" tasting. Pours dark brown chestnut, medium tan head, a bit fizzy, nice residual lacing. Aroma is very chocolate, a bit of belgian spiciness. Medium sweet, light bitter, chocolate, yeast spicy esters. Medium body. Interesting.

Bottle, cheers to Drake for gifting this. The pour’s deep reddish brown. The tiny off-white head fizzles out pretty quickly. Not particularly attractive. Plenty of chocolate malts, cocoa powder aromas. Hints of tangy red berry. Some Belgian yeast, toasty brown sugar. Mellow oxidized flavors. Some toasted tobacco. Thin and slightly ashy. Faded raspberries dipped in chocolate. Dry finish. Some tart bubblegum. Medium body, quite fizzy. Overall, a few ounces were more than enough.

Bottle, courtesy Brigadier, thanks! Pour is ruby, tan head, decent retention/lace. Aroma of milk chocolate, fruity ester, dark fruit. Taste is chocolate, fruity ester, dark fruit, light clove. Palate is soft, slick, sweet finish.

12 oz. bottle shared with the group early 2012. Pours a clear copper brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have some sweet malts, powdery dark chocolate, yeast, mild fruit notes and a very light nutty component. Interesting, a bit soft at the finish.

Poured from a 13 ounce bottle. Pours a darker brown with no had. Aroma is creamy and sweet. Tastes sweet bad nutty. All around, this is a pretty nice beer.

Brown pour with a nice light tan head. Not much going on in the nose, maybe just a touch of roasted malt. Spiciness from the Belgian yeast gives way to strong chocolate flavors.

Thanks, Adam! Nice and thick dark brown pour, creamy even. Nutty and understated malts in the nose, along with milk chocolate. Interesting flavors, as the dubbel characteristics are a bit off of the conventional, which suits the chocolate profile well. Nice, as expected from NG.
