Our heady Spiced Ale summons escape from the ordinary. Lavish English and Wisconsin Malts slow brewed caramel goodness into this beefy bronze Strong Ale registering 20 degrees Plato O.G. Aged on Oak in the Open Top Cellar so that Cassia Cinnamon, Ginger and Allspice could be carefully hand stirred into the velvety Toffee notes of this aromatic Spiced Ale. 100% Naturally Bottle fermented to warm the chill from your soul.

Pours a sultry deep amber with a thicker khaki head that settles to a thick ring and film, leaving some foamy, spotty lace around the edges. Nose involves baked apple, Tennessee whiskey, a melange of spices, some peppery zesty stuff along with some darker, caramelized stuff, hints of maple, some booze. Pretty sweet, fairly bitter, a touch tart. Fuller bodied, quite active carb, some oiliness, finishing long and dry with spices and toasted malt. Really refreshing for such a big beer, making it dangerous. Probably should be a sipper, but itís quite easy drinking. Nice complexity and spice integration. Excellent weird brew.

12 oz bottle from Hilltop Brewery (New Glarus, WI). Pours a nice deeper orange copper hue, gentle haze, healthy reddish glow trails out to that copper fire, decent carbonation with tannish bubbly layer of head atop, mellow lacing as it settles with decent lacing. Aromas are decent ginger, touches of allspice and cinnamon. A bit of carmelization, some biscuit and gentle toastiness. Mellow sweetness, touches of gentle caramel, a bit of oakiness and mellow tannic vanilla. The spice element is present but not overdone. Initial is medium bodied, some candied oranges and citrus rind up front, orange, caramel and toastiness. Carmelized with candied ginger, a bit of coolness. The middle is sweeter, that body ups the ante a bit with toffee, biscuits and caramel. Firmer spiciness, cinnamon and allspice, faint mace meets some decent oak and vanilla, touches of gentle sweetness but nothing overdone. A bit dry and spicy into the backend. This beer really runs the gambit well, nicer rich orange, cinnamon and ginger. A bit sweet at times but reeled in and back on pace with some dryness, toast, and firmer spicy finish that allows the beerís namesake to do some work and spread itís wings. This really actually works quite well, expertly crafted for a difficult and probably frequently overdone "style". Nice Wintery feel without being thick or cloying. Nice stuff.

Bottle: Pours pale, copper-amber with a thick, light tan head. Caramel, cinnamon and ginger aroma. Taste is richly toffee, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon. Very sweet and soft...malty, sticky. A ton of flavour.

Hazy brigh orange - soapy lace - aroma of orange peel, ginger, vanilla, oak, toffee, overripe apples - soft carbonation - flavors of vanilla, toffee - fairly sweet at first, then some tartness and a prominent acidity - thatís when the spices kick in - strong ginger and cinnamon, some notes of orange - spicy, moderately acidic finish - interesting.

Bottle; Pour is murky medium golden / amber with a frothy / fluffy off white head into this glass. The nose is heavy pie spice, caramel ,sweetbread, toffee notes, with a grassy hop presence here as well. The flavor profile is sharp hop bitter, moving to breaded pudding, allspice dominance, more grassy undertones, caramel presence, and light cinnamon. Well - It isnít bad. It isnít something I would pick up again, however.

12 oz bottle pours copper with big thick head. Aroma is sweet, malty and spicy. Taste is bold malts and loads of spice. Sweet and smooth. Reminds me of a pumpkin spice ale. Great Beer!

Pours a deep orange-ish amber color with a big enough head that dissipates quite a bit leaving some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is potpourri for sure, mostly cinnamon & ginger to me, but itís pretty rich & spicy. Plenty of beers that have this kind of bouquet come off as medicinal or poorly conceived, as expected from this brewery, this aroma is well finessed and perfectly enjoyable.

The flavor is indeed quite spice forward, it almost strikes me with too much spice to the point of astringency at first, but as it sits on your palate & the cinnamon lingers & the spicy ginger sings a touch... well itís hard not to like it, but itís a sipper. The beer is only really lightly sweet and some toffee notes shine through all the spices as does some vanilla and woodiness.

Probably something Iíd enjoy more in the winter months, but I never made it up Northeast this winter, so Iím giving it a spring take.

12oz bottle, red foil, 86 degrees outside, shoes and socks on, no viking helmet .. . toffee notes indeed but the spice takes over, some bread as well .. . good, but an odd release for the time and for the brewery .. . . iím afraid of sharks Ė but only in a water situation.
