3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured I to a tulip a clear dark golden or pumpkin color with a nice 1+ white finger head. Aroma was of green apples/cider up front followed by some burnt toffee and finishing with a ton of spice. Taste followes the nose with sweetness and apple followed by a sour and bitter maltiness and finishing with spices I can’t pick out (some cinnamon for sure). There is a lot going on and a bit difficult to pick it all out. Mouthfeel is medium and pretty smooth. Feel like this should have about a 7% abv but can’t detect much until it warms to about 55 degrees due to all this sweet spicy maltiness going on.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle. Pours a clear, dark amber color with an orange hue and topped by a thick, fluffy off white head of foam that quickly settles to a thin film. No real lace to speak of on the glass. The aroma shows notes of dark fruit, buttery toffee, toasted caramel, and sweet bready malts with some yeasty esters as well. Very malt forward, but not overly sweet which is nice. The flavor is malt forward as well with the dark fruit, toasted caramel, buttery toffee, and sweet bread all playing a role with some esters and a nice drying quality from the yeast. Not much in the way of hops or peat/smoke like you would find in a traditional scotch ale though. It’s able to avoid getting overly sweet though. Medium bodied, but a touch thin on the mouthfeel with soft carbonation that leads to a relatively short finish. This has held up nicely with a couple years on this bottle now. Not sure it fits quite into the Scotch ale category, but it is a solid winter time beer either way.

2.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Gingerbread house smell. Taste is semi-sweet, semi-bitter, scotch ale notes, and a slight metallic note. Kind of bitter aftertaste along with a well water note. High carbonation with light foam.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle: Thanks, Jeff. Orange-copper mix on the body with a mild haze. Foamy, eggshell colored head on top that leaves decent webbing on the glass. Aroma is a strange blend of winter warmer & Scottish ale. Red Delicious apples, cinnamon, ginger, cocoa powder, herbal & leafy hoppage, a touch of mint, very faint menthol, sweet bubblegum, clove, toast, finish has reminders of Belgian yeast. Definitely a lot going on. Flavor leads off with heavy herbal hop notes; mint, toast, brown sugar, gum, coriander, cinnamon, clove, & yeast all come crashing down at once. More subtle background notes of apple, graham cracker, smoke, & caramel are there, too. Definitely a strange brew. Not bad, but just decent, especially based on my standards for New Glarus.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle to snifter. Nose is full of sticky, chewy, malty aromas with a light toffee/buttery sensation. Some light esters, mostly apple. Pours a slightly hazy dark orange to red with a medium sized off white head. Wowsers on the taste. Initially full of malt sweetness with some toastiness and caramel. Then the alcohol kicks you in the chest. Finish is on the sweet wide, but man, the alcohol just continues to build and build. My ears are starting to warm as well. Overall a well made beer, but the alcohol is out of control, almost a tad hot and burning.

"At first this seems to light in color and body for a scotch ale, but that ain’t it. Color, maybe, but that’s irrelevant. Less chocolate malt and more toffee than a lot of wee heavies. It opens nicely and becomes pleasantly warming. I like this, but for a style I really like and a brewer I love I was just a tiny bit disappointed. Not as wee heavy in its presentation as Belgian. Fruity and even a little yeasty like a BSA instead of peaty like a scotch. Definitely enjoyed, though. Thanks again to Heybeerman for the trade."

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This beer is a slightly hazy dark amber color with a medium light beige head that diminishes steadily to a film. Aroma of malt, butterscotch and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, earthy hops, yeast and spices. The finish is dark fruit and malt, with some linger spice in the aftertaste. Decent overall.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle from Homer321- thanks again, Sean! Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a small off-white head that leaves a ring and some film that leans to one side. Aroma of fruitcake, allspice, nutmeg, caramel, and cardboard. Flavor of fruitcake, allspice, caramel, nutmeg, gingerbread, graham cracker, cardboard, and a metallic note at the end. Kind of boozy on the finish, too. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a boozy, spritzy mouthfeel. Past its prime. Wish I’d gotten a hold of one sooner.
