Because it just wasn’t pale and lifeless the way it is. Ah, this is New Glarus though and I’m expecting better despite their obvious attempt at a BMC clone. Light watery body, nothing going on with the palate. Little citrus character...light....LIGHT malt on the body. Thus, the term extra pale. The only redeeming quality is the use of hops here that helped to give it some life. Beerdedone (1888), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of citrus and sweet malts. The flavor is citrus, fruit, sweet, with a mild bitterness. Good beer. Brigadier (1260), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA

Coming from New Glarus, this was a let down. I knew not to expect much from something biling itself as a premium lager but surely it could have had more taste than this. If the Careys were trying to nail an upscale version of a macro, they succeeded. Unfortunately, that still results in a bland boring (mostly) flavorless beer. Pass on this one even if it is free.
Aroma / Appearance - A one-finger mottled head soon disappeared into the body which looked much like Barq’s cream soda with an added boost of carbonation. Corn, grain and butterscotch underline a very bland nose that is best described as buttered white toast. It is mildly offensive but it is moreso dull.
Flavor / Palate - The only flavor is that of hard butterscotch candy. There are some undertones of corn, grain and white bread but nothing lasts long enough to pin it down well. Overall this was extremely boring and predictable. Naturally it would also be easy to drink if your palate was used to this; for me it took a while to finish because I kept expecting something else. | 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 26, 2006 Bottle (12oz). Via trade with kmweaver. Pale, bright, clear yellow, large white frothy head; something scary about that colour. Smells like 1,000 other pale lagers - dry, grainy, vaguely vegetal, stale yeast - ehhh. The taste is surprisingly refreshing - clover-sweet, thick, almost candyish malt, very light floral hops in the finish. Thick body - really thick, it’s weird, only a whisper of carbonation and astringency, very rapid finish, syrupy mouthfeel. I’m not turning cartwheels, but it beats all hell out of Bud. Thanks for this one, Ken. theisti (1700), Leawood, Kansas, USA

| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Oct 25, 2006 2006 bottle (I assume) in a fantastic trade with Dorwart, consumed on 9/28/06. Clear, light-beeswax with hints of copper and lemon tints. Lazy, large bubbles drift upwards, creating a small white head that, even with a forcible pour is dismally retained and creates no lacing. Aroma: Hmmm, well, that’s not good. I must say I was expecting a clean, crisp, flavorful, light lager, being somewhat skeptical of the scores on here, not to mention most scores for pale lagers on this site. And how could New Glarus, a brewery which, seemingly, can do no wrong, create some mass-market, flawed mess of a beer? I didn’t believe it at all, but dipping my nose in to a cacophony of DMS, acetyldehyde, stale, washed out, cereal-grade-like malts and a sluggish, nearly metallic finish, with vanilla and other cheap, sugary bi-product, there’s just no way around it. This beer sucks. Badly. The flavor is more of the same, compound brewing flaws making it mostly undrinkable to anyone looking to get more than just drunk. Fizzy carbonation, poor attenuation, even and just a cheap, corny, DMS flavor. Guess they don’t feel the need to condition this stuff for proper lengths of time. I can understand it, though. If people are simply switching from BMC to this and not complaining (the majority of them), why waste extra time and money to condition it when the microbrew crowd knows to just pass it up and buy their other lagers. I don’t grudge them anything for it. Still, it is pretty awful stuff! pineypower (1111), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Oct 20, 2006 Thanks to ughsmash for this one. Pours out a straw color with a frothy white head. Aroma is somewhat grassy with some sweet malts. Mouthfeel is a bit watery. Taste is smooth, but very stright foward with some swet malts, and that was really about it, plain and simple, which isnt always a bad thing kmweaver (2503), Sebastopol, California, USA

Pours a clear golden yellow with a fluffy white head; good retention and lacing. Slight aroma with a sweet, vinuous quality; like Welch’s grape juice. Light, crisp mouthfeel with good levels of carbonation, slightly grapey; light malt profile. The finish is quick, without any noticeable bitterness.
