COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flemish monks brewed the first Abt. A voluptuous temptress they named for their Monastery Abbot. Belgian Dark Candi Sugar encourages the decadence of rum, raisin dark chocolate and sherry like fruit tones to conspire happily in almost 20˚ Plato. Rich and full bodied this is one to lie down or if you are bold enjoy now, but take your time - linger. This beer cries to be sipped and enjoyed.

Bottle for New Years Eve. Pours a brownish maroon with medium beige head. Plenty of frothy beige lacing. Rich and slightly smoky aroma of dark fruit, oak, prunes, and butterscotch. Flavor is slightly hot, more prune and caramel qualities that that smoky oak present in the nose. Plenty of sweet brown sugar, and some more oak emerges toward the finish. Thin, slightly watery body with moderately fizzy carbonation. Trappist goodness.

12oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours deep brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of spiciness, some caramel and chocolate malts, dark fruit, raisins, and some alcohol. Flavor about the same, but could be stronger on the malts and spiciness. Texture is average. A decent beer, but I was expecting better from my first beer of this brewery.

No longer retired since I’ve had it both tap and bottle up in Madison. I’m going to rate the bottle since that was better than tap. Clear cola brown pour with a minimal white head. Cherry, cola, toffee, booze and caramel aroma. Flavor has a yeasty fruit profile along with some caramel and toffee notes. It feels kind of young and one sided, but I will forever stop from saying that this might improve with age. On tap this had a one sided almost bloody mary/soy sauce approach which wasn’t nearly as noticeable here. Chewy mouthfeel, small bubbly carbonation. Almost hangs out in the "jammy" category. Hmmm. Bottle version reminded me a bit of Chimay blue label if I wanted to make a connection, but different and cheap enough to be able to make a distinction. Normally I really like this style, but this is far too muddled to be considered good, especially from this brewery. Maybe I’m just being too hard on them.

12 oz bottle. Dark brownish burgundy pour with decent head and retention. Aroma typical of a quad with dark fruit, malt and yeast dominating. Taste follows the nose with a nice kick of spices. Mouth was a little thin. Above average quad albeit a bit watery. Won’t be mistaken as a Westy 12 but certainly isn’t too far off from Chimay Blue.

Dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of yeast, dark pitted fruits, booze, varnish along with some mild candi sugar and molasses. Taste is boozy with pitted fruits, dates, yeast, burnt sugar, caramel and a bit of an off-flavor. Finishes up a bit hot.

Dark brown with minimal sediment. The aroma has alcohol, red wine, sweet malt and Belgian yeast. Good palate, and very low carbonation. Flavor is sweet with lots of malt, some dried fruit, a very light vinous character & port. A good beer. It tastes more like a dubbel than an abt, which is ok.

In short: A fruity candy in a bottle with a light spicy twist. Just ok.
How: Bottle 12oz. Consumed when probably about 1 year of age. Bottle sent to me by oakbluff, thanks a lot Scott
The look: Clear ruby-mahogany body topped by a medium but quickly diminishing off-white head
In long: Rather timid nose for the style and size of the beer showing only light red and dark fruits notes as well as some liquorice candy. Taste is raisins, red liquorice candy, Dr Pepper™, some molasses, some vanilla. The Dr Pepper™ flavor was particularly obvious for anybody who drinks that shit (I do). On the plus side the beer was particularly easy to drink for a near 10% brew, but on the minus side this is a rather unexciting strong beer that also doesn’t really taste like a Abt. Not my favorite in the New Glarus Unplugged series. At some point I wanted to try each release of the New Glarus Unplugged series but that probably won’t happen for three simple reasons: 1) I’m very lazy. 2) I never reach my goals

Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured clear dark copper with an average off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate complex caramel malt, brown sugar and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced complex sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where met.
