Flemish monks brewed the first Abt. A voluptuous temptress they named for their Monastery Abbot. Belgian Dark Candi Sugar encourages the decadence of rum, raisin dark chocolate and sherry like fruit tones to conspire happily in almost 20˚ Plato. Rich and full bodied this is one to lie down or if you are bold enjoy now, but take your time - linger. This beer cries to be sipped and enjoyed.

Pours deep red with thin white head, aroma is rum, dark fruit, and molasses. Taste is similar with emphasis on raisin character. Good brew, just not quite as complex as normal abt brews.

(Draught and 12oz bottle, courtesy of blutt59) Pours a clear deep amber body with moderate beige head. Aroma of raisins, dates, caramel, and molasses. Flavor of raisins, Belgian yeast, dates, caramel, subtle vanilla, and brown sugar.

Aroma of burnt caramel,molassas and a little fruity licorice. Taste has that fuity malty taste of the clone it was aiming for,just in a shallower way. You can pick out a lot of the flavors of those great Abbey abts,but you have to concentrate .I wonder if Dan could try this again and just amp it up a little,small batch more expensive

12 oz. bottle. Dark ruby color with a thick light brown head. Dark, sugary aroma with a hint of spice. Flavors of brown sugar, vanilla, brandy and a creamy dark malt. Full bodied and finishes with a malty, spicy yeast hit.

Bottle. Thanks, Kevin. Amber pour with beige head. Aroma is mild with nuts, toffee, dried fruit, a little yeasty spice. Has a sweet brown sugar character to the flavor with a rather off, rancid nut note, breadiness, yeasty spice. Still ok stuff, but I doubt Id want to drink a full pour of it.

Bottle. Clear dark brown pour, minimal carbonation and an aroma of raisins and a little brown sugar. Flavor is metallic candi sugar, a little light rum, good amount of malt (but not too heavy) and finished light on the palate. Another well made New Glarus brew with an attractive price tag!

12 oz bottle from the brewery (New Glarus, WI). Pours a deep dark chestnut brown, some fiery orange edges with decent carbonation, decent haze, a frothy light brown or khaki head that stays decent layered, laces ok. Aromas are a healthy dose of Belgian Candi sugars, plums and raisins, vanilla, a touch of spicy yeast, bakers chocolate. More raisin and dried cherries move into the fold, full flavored with deep sweet notes, growing vinous qualities, a touch of cake, brown sugar. Initial is fuller bodied, sweet candi sugars mix with lightly spiced yeastiness, brown sugar, vanilla, light darker and sweet chocolate intermixed, raisins and plums, prunes, a touch of coffee cake. Quite complex, but sweetness rues the day. More vinous dark fruit qualties, dried fruit, cherries, with a touch of chocolate. I really get some light cherry cough syrup after awhile, something Im sensitive to and might not come to you in your experience.. the medicinal qualities gives me a double take or something of the like.. probably the biggest flaw for me. Lingering lightly bitter and mellow sweet finish towards the dark side of brown sugar, candi sugar, and lingering cocoa, caramel, touch of vanilla. A bigger beer, fuller, alcohol tries its best to hide.. but it does warm a bit. Very nice, Dan. The cough syrup gets to me though.. hmmm. Good, not great.

Ruby amber, sparse head. Lightly musky, easy sugary candi malt body. Westmalle-like body, but with more muted phenols--as if it has been fermented at a lower temperature. Easy muskyness throughout and rather clean. No-off flavors. Sensationally smooth for the ABV% and more akin, in most respects, to a dubbel than to a quad.

8/17/10. 12oz bottle hooked up with help from cbfobes. Brownish red pour, wonderful ruby red when held to the light, with a fizzy light tan head that fades fast. Bready aroma with tortilla chips, dark fruits, and Belgian spice. The flavor is sweet, dark candi sugar with roasted malts and a dash of sweet chocolate. Pretty nice, cant wait to age some.
