JohnnyOS (646), Golden, Wisconsin, USA Jun 2, 2007 Pours iridescent orange color with minimal head. Aroma was slightly sweet, light cherry and alcohol... flavors follows with a bit of warmth. Light vanilla aftertaste Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 1, 2007 Bottle from Iowaherkeye. Glowing orange color with no head. Spicy brett nose. The aroma and taste were the same. Sweet caramel, funk and brett. Firm medium body. As this warms it gets much better with lite vanilla notes throughout. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada May 29, 2007 Chicago trip. Tuesday 10:13. Dark orange-brown. Light head. Winey tangerine aroma with a hint at sourness. Light cherry liqueur and alcohol flavour. Alcohol doesn’t pound you. Building vanilla aftertaste. Boutip (2333), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada May 28, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Demcorhip: Poured a medium-to-dark brown color ale with a nice foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with hint of vanilla and bourbon coming out. Taste is quite sweet but avoid being exceedingly sweet which would have gross out this beer with some light vanilla and some alcohol. Body is not as full as I would have expected for the style. I find this style to be quite thought for the brewer with the high expectation resulting from the wonderful Trappist example of the style. I also thought that the barrel-aging didn’t work really well on that one and that bourbon taste I could have done without and the sweetness was not balance right. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA May 26, 2007 12oz. I could tell this was a unique beer as soon as I popped the cap from the aroma. Unplugged Belgian Quadruple poured clear and glowing garnet into a snifter. A 1 finger ivory head formed on the pour that receded to a thick ring around the glass and wisps of foam throughout the center. Quickly rising carboation bubbles rise to the ring some actually shoot up from the bottom of my glass.
The smell of this beer is amazing! I don’t know where to begin. Rum soaked raisins mingle with earthy wood and leather but at the same time I’m picking up ripe pear. Was this beer barrel aged? Sure smells like it. Solid dose of tart and sweet cherries rise to the nose as well. Hidden in the background is that brett funkiness. Occasionally alcohol wafts through the air. Each swirl brings the beer alive. This is a complex and mind numbing beer.
The flavor doesn’t quite live up to the nose but is still a very unique brew. Sweet cherries along with the woodiness from what I believe is barrel aging come through first. Slight metallic twang mid palate along with the rum soaked raisins. The flavors are much the same as in the aroma but more toned down and muddled where it’s harder to distinctively pick each one out. Very good.
Much lighter bodied than I would have though before opening it. Medium bodied but with solid carbonation pushes this brew through quickly. Slightly prickly on the tongue.
For a quadruple this is very easy to put away. The lighter body helps with the drinkability.
This is a truly unique, interesting, delicious beer from New Glarus. I would like to find out a little more about it. There are some questions I would like answered. Ex. Barrel aged? Brett? Cherries?
Notes: After checking New Glarus website I see this Quad was fermented using brett and matured in bourbon barrels.
5/19/07 pantanap (1322), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 26, 2007 bottle....appearance: darkish toffee brown with a thin white head....aroma: sweet malt, dark fruit (plum and raisin), molasses me thinks....taste: sweet plum, vanilla, and malts with the abv being very disguised, slightly spiced but the flavor is a little subdued overall. alcohol makes somewhat of a presence in the end..... not a bad quad in the slightest. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 26, 2007 Bottle. Belgian candi sugar, fruity nose. Some allspice. Hazy, reddish copper body. Large, yellowish off-white head. Lasting. Plumes of carbonation rise from the bottom of the glass. Excellent lace. Sweet and alcoholic. Belgian character, although an American bent is fairly evident. Well made. Plenty of flavor. Very tasty, not cloying. This is not an extraordinary example of the style, but it is an excellent beer in its own right. TheKegergator (241), California, USA May 25, 2007 Thanks for the brew tangfoot. Pours a clear medium amber, looks freaking good. Head dissipates pretty quick. Strong flavors in this one. Fruits, with a nice tart finish. Great brew.
