kepano (239), Meudon, France Mar 11, 2008 Bright copper and clear as crystal, an off white foam dissipates quickly. Already we seem far from the Belgian masters that inspire the brew. The nose is confused and confusing. Pear, apple and lemon provide an unexpected sourness opposed to the sterile scents of rubbing alcohol and talcum. Ginger, clove, cherries and a somewhat inappropriate bretty oak character add to the commotion. The aromatic experience does not fall completely amiss as a semblance of unison is reached after breathing. The flavor follows with an odd, almost artificial combination of strawberry, cherry and vanilla, underlined by malapropos nuances of bourbon. Nutmeg, apple, nougat and honey are present and appreciated but do not contribute enough weight to counteract the overwhelming alcohol. The unpleasantly sour, dirty finish leads to a conversely enjoyable caramel and banana aftertaste. I’ve had a streak of good luck with New Glarus and especially their Unplugged series but this effort was decidedly unbalanced and not up to par. Such is the nature of these one-off productions, I suppose.
lb4lb (1945), Austin, Texas, USA May 6, 2009 Bottle courtesy of JB185. Thanks man! Pours orange reddish with a medium lived offwhite head. Smell is belgian yeast and malt. Taste is oxidized tart metalliciness at first but then very sweet. Not as dark of a fruity flavor as expected. Medium body, normal carbonation and cloyingly sweet overall. Did not enjoy this, but am glad to have tried it. Grovlam (3740), Copenhagen, Denmark May 1, 2009 Bottle [Courtesy of hopscotch, thanks buddy for an excellent trade] Average light fizzy off-white head that mostly lasted. Fair display of lacework. Somewhat clear amber color. Quite explosive Quart notes with the classic Belgian yeast-dried fruit-heavy sweet malty notes. Also comes alcohol that gives it this vinous feel. Over the palate came what could appear like mild spice and a hint of bitterness. Full bodied with an average carbonation. Heavy sweet flavor with light acidic and bitterness. Lingering dried fruity and vinous lasting finish. TampaBrew (302), Tampa, Florida, USA Apr 26, 2009 Pours a deep red. Slight malt, candy sweet nose. flavor is candy sugar, tart fruit and good malt balance. Hides the 11% well.

Aroma is sour and funky with some caramel and a touch of barnyard and booze. Flavor is very sweet. I’m getting alot of honey and some horseblanket, but it’s not as sour as the aroma suggests. Finishes with a slight wine like dryness. Medium to full bodied with almost no carbonation.
