holdenn (1161), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 16, 2008 7/15/08: 12 oz bottle thanks to drewbeerme for this sample. Refreshing during a great game of horse shoes on a really hot/humid day. Slightly hazed yellow color with a creamy off white head. Yeast and sweet grain malts in the nose with a little wheat and lemon. Sweet pale malt flavors that are a lot tarter and lemonier than I had imagined. I wouldn’t say its the lemoniest but lemonier than others for sure. Finishes with lemons and hay. As it goes down, its overly lemony and could use some farmhouse funk. Still a drinkable and tasty beer.
AgentSteve (852), SF Bay Area, California, USA Oct 9, 2008 Not my favorite style, pours a hazy pale straw with a thin white head. Kind of a tomato, vegital nose. The flavor is sweet on the front palate, but just fades away with very little else. hellbilly (909), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Oct 9, 2008 bottle by way way of iowaherkeye... pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color topped by a short lived soft white head. pale malty aroma with notes of light yeast, green apple tartness and musty minerals akin to a cement lined basement (i assume this is the wheat?). the flavor has a sourness that reminds me of a mix of pippin apples and sour green grapes... mixed with musty wheat, cooked and muted citrus skins, herbs/grassiness and minerals with a dry tart finish. there’s a bit of milk and milky phlegm in the throat during the aftertaste. medium body with a prickly carbonated mouth feel... refreshing when it’s cold. meh when warm.... cgarvieuk (2541), Edinburgh, Scotland Oct 8, 2008 Bottle at home thanks to Ughsmash for this one ...Pale yellow with light bubbles ... light lemon hop ... tart front and a little lemon ...little grape ...little sweetness... but this was a bit disapointing as its no where near sharp enough for what i expected. Glouglouburp (2006), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Oct 8, 2008 In short: Sweet white grapes dominate in this very sour and very tart Berliner Weiss.
How: Bottle 12oz. Drank fresh, 2 months after the beer release. From jjpm74, thanks a million John, that was a kick-ass beer that I was dying to try
The look: Partly cloudy blonde-yellow body topped by a medium but short lived white head
In long: Nose is extra-ripe light-colored fruits (white grapes, bananas) and something that I’d consider barnyard in a cow-ish kind of way. Intriguing but not enthralling nose. Taste is surprising. This is a surprisingly intense little beer, almost a sipper. Dominated by some kind of extremely sour white grapes and lemony tartness. Some woody cedar/oak notes. The beer is not as wheaty/dry that I’m used to get from this style (although I haven’t had very many). More cookie malts than hey and with a little sweetness presence. No hops presence to speak of. I’ve had a lot of sour ales that weren’t as sour as this little dude. Take away the sweetness and this would be a classic. Sometimes I wish the German had won the war, more Berliner Weiss and less 13% Imperial-Whatever. barleyPops (1064), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA Oct 6, 2008 I always look forward to trying a new beer from New Glarus. Once again, I was not disappointed. pours a slightly hazed, pale golden yellow with a big soapy white head. even after a couple of minutes there was still a one finger head sitting atop Illini08’s prized Edelweiss glass. aroma is wheaty with some sour lemon and some grapes. flavor is more of the same with the sour lemon dominate. light, refreshing and very enjoyable.
