JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jun 9, 2007 Updated: Jun 23, 2007 Darkish clear copper with a thin creamy light tan head. Alcoholic fruit and toffee, sweet malt with some bourbon and vanilla melded in with some sweet pastries. Very nice aroma, but its hard to pick out a lot of specifc things. Initial impression of the flavor is an awkward slightly soured bourbony bock. It opens up a bit in the glass to yield something with a good complexity in a bock base. Fruity black cherry, bourbony vanilla. Still though, there is a dark grainy bourbon presence that is a touch rough. Looking forward to getting some age on this.
Update 6/23 - I don’t know... this seems much more open today. Brett is a little in your face, and tastes nice.
BOLTZ7555 (528), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 30, 2008 Bottle acquired via trade with iowaherkeye...Thanks Joey!!! Now this is a beer that infuses the bourbon barrel with the brew delicately. It accentuates, rather than overwhems, the palate. If I wanted bourbon, I’d buy a bottle!!! Absolute artistry!!! Aroma is brown sugar, toffee, caramel and a slight nuttiness. Oak, vanilla, and bourbon (of course) find their way to the nose but more subtly. All of the aromas work their way into the flavor. Tasty, drinkable, and fairly complex. Thanks again Joey for a great trade!!! MatSciGuy (261), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Sep 27, 2008 [Bottle] shared by JK. Pours deep brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is caramel nicely balanced by vanilla and bourbon. Flavor matches, with a nice melding of flavors and great balance. JB175 (1364), Holland, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 22, 2008
A big thanks to the great trader that hooked me up with this one (not remembering off hand). This one has a warm amber color with a reddish tinge. Overwhelmingly sweet aroma with some rich vanilla, oak, cereal, and dark fruit. Flavor has a light barrel taste with just enough oak, vanilla, and woody funk. Sweetness is well managed by the barrel and results in a smooth and very drinkable brew. I am always a fan of NG beers and this one delivers as well! JCB (1069), Durham, North Carolina, USA Sep 16, 2008 12oz from ucusty - thanks, David! Lovely amber pour, with a slight but very fizzy head. Nose is typically suggestive New Glarus oaking, with vanilla leading strongly along with woody flavors, and hints of the bourbon to come. I wonder, is this fairly easy sipper using Uff-da as the base beer or is it a new recipe? Either way, it’s a very pleasant brew - rich but still drinkable, chewy malts but hints of the promised Brett, and a nice sting from the bourbon on the finish. Another winner from this great brewery. AndrewKScott (412), Lemont, Illinois, USA Sep 14, 2008 Pours amber. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, butter, fruit, caramel. Taste is a bit funky, kind of buttery, vanilla and bourbon too. Pretty good, I’m glad I found this. I think the bourbon barreling goes better with this style than Imperial stouts or barley wines.
