Bottled. Poured a clear, deep garnet with an oh-so-creamy 1.5 finger beige head (didnít stick around for too long, but it was beautiful, man). Nose found tart over-ripe cherries, oak, smoky vanilla, and a solid dose of roasty bakerís chocolate. Flavor brought out levels of complexity that were not evident in the aroma... fresh tart and sweet cherries cascading over oakey roasted chocolate.. complemented by some vanilla and spices (anise and licorice primarily). Body was a tad thin, but that didnít detract from the wonderful experience. Get some!

Big thanks to Ohio Dad for this one. The pour was a great ruby blackish color tan head. It poured like a dark merlot. The aroma was hugely krieky, with roasty dark malt, berries, merlot, and some hops and slight florals. The taste was very tart and krieky, with a solid roasty malt backbone, and even raspberries and cacao in the finish. Velvety, complex palate. Wonderful, as I would expect from thsi world class brewer.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2007 Dan has done it again. This is one amazing fruit beer. A strong taste of cherries and a great aroma and appearance. It goes down smooth and has a wonderful aftertaste. The oak taste only adds to this wonderful beer. I will be sad to see this beer become retired. (I only wish dan could keep this one as one of the year rounders!)

This fruit stout pours a deep dark nearly eclipse red color from a 12oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is tart cherry, with some chocolate and malt. A medium bodied fruit beer/ stout. Malts are chocolate and fruit. Most of the flavors is from the tart/sour cherries, the roasty chocolate malt flavors are way in the background. WOW can New Glarus can do Cherry beers! Amazing. Tart cherry at the front and sweet malt at the finish. As usual with every NG Beer Iíve tasted, nice balance and smooth taste. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly tart cherries.

Ahhh, I have been waiting a long time to try this one. Thanks to Stine for hooking me up with a bottle in trade. Iím a huge fan of Belgian Red and stouts in general, so this one is right up my alley. Pours a dark red body with a light head. Nose of sour yeast, mashed oranges, cherry pie, chocolate, candied sugars. Smells about as good as any other beer I have tried. Flavor of sour funk, yeast, oranges, chocolate covered cherries, some spice and some sweet notes. Finish is medium to long in length, average carbonation and medium bodied. Very, very well done and lived up to the hype I created for it in my head.

Bottle from brewblackhole. Calling this chocolate covered or toasty Belgian Red does have some merit. Dark brown color, perhaps a shade of red in there, nice fluffy tan/pinkish head. Nice lacing. Big whiffs of cherries in the aroma along with some malt, cookie, cough syrup (in a good way), and grains. Authentic cherry flavors are sharp and delicious upfront, very much like Belgian Red at first. Mid palate this switches gears and shows oak, soft milk chocolate, and caramel. More Stout-like qualities in the backend but thereís no mistaking that this is a Fruit Beer with cherries really standing out. Thereís a velvety soft malt complexity in the flavor that seems like a trademark of New Glarus fruit beers. A real masterpiece. My bottle didnít last very long.

Aroma:Extremely sweet maraschino cherry. Appearance:A pretty dark red. Medium head retention. Nice lacing. Taste:First, cherry hits you, as if you were drinking maraschino cherry juice and sour cherries. Next, the medium flavor turns sour, funky and wild. The aftertaste leaves you with mild cherries. Palate:Medium body, nice carbonated feel. Creamy aftertaste. Overall:This is a complex brew, with every sip, I get something different out of it. Itís dark, like a stout, but the dark malt canít fight through the cherry flavor.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2012 [Bottle] Pours brown with a small beige head. Aroma is huge on cherry and black currants, with notes of watermelon jolly rancher. The taste is cherry, then some sort of roasted malt, followed by tart cherry skins, fruit punch, cocoa and subtle notes of coffee. Unusual, but very enjoyable. Medium mouthfeel, smooth, long dry finish. Wow, another very unique and enjoyable beer from New Glarus. I could drink this one all day long. Old rating: 7/3/9/4/17=4.0

New rating: A blast of cherry with some malt and light cinnamon. Taste is so unique and enjoyable. Tart cherry skins blend with cinnamon, barley, and some oak. Wow. So often I am disappointed by beers these days, but Dan Carey rarely misses. This is even better than I remember, and just an amazing dessert beer. I can see how some people would not care for this beer, but I love it.

Bottle, thanks to my buddy wavers1. What a treat. This was my first from New Glarus and its clear that they have a talent for fruit infused brews. This one poured a dark brown with a small head that faded in quick fashion to nothing, left some lace. Aroma was a blast of cherry infused roasted malts. I think I have to copy the guy who said it smelled like Ludenís cough drops, that is dead on, just bizarre. Flavors were thick with cherry goodness, some malt, roasted, crept in there but cherries dominated, wow. This is categorized well as the stout factor doesnít play a big role, this is a fruit beer. The mouthfeel was slick and full, so pleasant. Finished with a big tartness. This is one of those brews that really stands out from everything else, I havenít come across many of those. I am amazed.
