mreusch (460), Olathe, Kansas, USA Apr 30, 2008 12oz. bottle, courtesy of footbalm, thanks Eric! Pours a hazy orange tinted iced tea color with a two finger foamy tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is quite full, dominated by wood, sour cherry and funk, along with a hint of vanilla. Flavor is some sour cherry with a little oak and some vanilla, but drops off significantly from the aroma, and the funk, acidity and sourness is just not where I want it. Carbonation is confusingly flat, and there’s only a slight bit of tart that carries over. A nice effort, but a shadow of a sour compared to others. Thanks again Eric!
douglas88 (826), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Oct 13, 2008 Bottle with a big thanks to hopscotch. Pours a dark and cloudy ruby color with a initially large off-white head that goes down to a small bubbly one. The aroma is very nice; sour cherries and oak, very tart. The flavor is very complex and nice; initial flavors are sweet malty and typical brown ale flavors. Later the very powerful barrel/woody flavors kick in, lots of vanilla and oak. The sour cherries melt into the wood to produce a strong tartness and yet are very mellow. Additionally, there is a sweetness also, brown sugar and candies, which also mixes well with the cherries. Very nice. Well balanced and not too sour. Lots of vanilla and wood in the finish. durhambeer (537), Durham, USA Oct 5, 2008 Big thanks to JCB for sharing -- what a treat! Muddy amber pour with small off-white head. Lots of tart cherries, some mild oak and vanilla, and dusty wood. Malty and sour. Quite nice. BMan1113VR (925), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA Sep 30, 2008 Bottle thanks to thanks to zathrus13. Pours a muddy deep brown with a foamy off-white head that leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is tart, but there is a sweetness, with vanilla, cherries, oak, brown sugar, cookie dough. Taste is not as sour as the nose would let on. Citrus, some fresh pineapple, cherries, lots and lots of vanilla, and maybe some maple syrup. Water like mouthfeel, light bubbles, and a decent amount of warming. BOLTZ7555 (528), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 28, 2008 Bottle acquired via trade with iowaherkeye...thanks Joey!!! WOW!!! This was a fantastic beer...complex, sour, fruity, delicious!!! Murky river water with a small eggshell head...its appearance definitely its least redeeming quality. Aroma of oak, cherry, smoke, and vanilla. This is one commercial description that hits the nail on the head!!! The wild yeast is definitely present, but not overpowering...and some sweeter flavors prevail (dark fruit, sour apple, graham cracker, and brown sugar). Wonderful beer...thanks again Joey!!! sneagrams3 (1453), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 11, 2008 Tasted 8/23/08. 12oz bottle. Dark yet relatively clear hue. Off-white eye-ball of head. Sour aromas with notes of vinegar and citrus. Woody and cherries. Doughy and raisins. Damn fine nose. Medium bodied with a tart palate. Raspberries and tart cherries. Sticky finish that lingers and provides a little heat. Touch woody. Mildly juicy sweet. But the bitterness shines above all. Mulled wine and spices. Lotta fruit, lotta bang! The sour aspect mellows as the beer warms. Good sour!
