Resinous and fruity aroma with citrus, peach and flowers. Big sticky hop flavor well balanced by some sweet malt and clean finishing bitterness. Interesting hop combination that works pretty well.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Bacterial (419) - Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA - MAY 8, 2013
Clear orange pour with a white head, some lacing. Pine and citrus dominate the nose. Floral, a touch sweet, then big hops and big bitterness. A bit more bitter finish than I like in a double.

Poured from bottle. Nice piney aroma. Pours out nice golden yellow with a white frothy head. medium bitterness, light sweetness, thick cramy texture. real good on the palate.

12 oz bottle from pepsican. Thanks, Andy. Quick rate. Pours a deep well hazed amber darker hue. Orange glowing edges, well hazed, darker body. A frothy whitish head atop dies to a filmy ring, laces ok. Aromas are sticky sweet caramel, a bit oxidized. Toffee, toast, biscuits. Bready with some florals, citrusy grapefruit rind, and lemons. Sweet and sticky, aged Barleywine-esque. Initial is biscuity and caramel driven, malty, but well done. Toasty, some bready malts and toffee. Carmelized malts are the crux here. Some florals, deadened a bit, gentle grass, earthy dryness. Middle brings the bulk, a medium bodied assault, so it’s not overdone. Toffee and toast, carmelized malts. Sticky sweet at times, backend shows dry florals and earthy hops. Any sort of dominant hop character has faded well. Still, a soapy earthy hop finish gives some life, decent bitterness lingers, a bit toasty, linger dry malty character passes that sweeter sticky middle. Overall, you can tell this beer was pretty good in it’s hayday. Today, it still stands the test of time. It’s a pretty solid beer, still dry and a bit hoppy, the malt elements aren’t overdone when they strike firmly. A bigger beer, aged like a dry sort of Barleywine. Solid.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle. It pours a hazy light gold color. Heavy pine resin nose with slight tropical notes. Tons of pine resin in the flavor. This is a hop bomb. Bitter hops all the way. Full bodied with a lasting bitter finish. Outstanding.

Thanks to Beerwolf77 for this extra!
A: Pours a hazy gold/copper color with a wispy white cap. OK retention.
S: The nose is definitely interesting and unlike anything I’ve had. Lots of honey, citrus, pine and resin. Alcohol is noticeable, especially as it warms up a little, but not really distracting.
T: Taste is quite different than the nose. A metallic note is immediately noticeable, along with citrus, pine, and orchard fruit (peach, apricot). Pretty bitter, and kind of balanced. A little more malt flavor would have done the trick.
MF/O: Lingering bitterness, prickly carbonation, and an orchard fruit finish.
Notes: Interesting Double IPA. I can’t tell if there are numerous flaws or not, but enjoyable nonetheless

This beer isalive and well and being sold under the name IIPA. I just bought two bottles from the brewery in July and it is very fresh. Beer pours cloudy, golden color with a large egg white head that is totally retained. Aroma is very citrusy and juicy also some earth. Taste is very enjoyably bitter. Anoter fantastic New Glarus brew. Dan Carey is a freaking genius!!!

12 ounce thanks to 5000. Tropical fruity aroma followed by hops and more tropical fruit. Slight malty character to the beer. Really nice.

12 oz bottle. Pours golden with a small white head. Aroma is pineapple and citric hops, a touch cheesy with a sweet caramel malt back. Flavor is much the same, the sweetness comes through more still with a ton of citrus and mango fruitiness. Finishes sweet, not much bitterness.

Wow. What a hoppy brew this is. Pours a clear coppery colour. Aromas smack of mango and other tropical fruit. Sweet fruity flavours momentarily then it’s all business. Huge bitterness takes over. Like chewing on pine needles. Delicious stuff.
