3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by Max. Pours a mostly clear deep woody copper amber with a nice fluffy head- slight lace. Aroma is big woody smokiness, thick sweet candied fruits and big toffee and big malts- biscuity, caramel, toast, burnt, and big beechwood and cherry wood smokiness- meaty- sweaty oily ham. Flavor is big toast, huge thick sweet malts, woody smpokiness more meatiness, fatty bacon, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, honey and butterscotch- slight molasses- big mouthfeel but still pretty easy to drink. Seemed like the alcohol was over 8% just by the body and the kick it had. Very good- but would have preferred it to be a bit drier so I could have drank more of it.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A: Amber/Brownish Hue, Passes Some Light, Thin White Head, Very Minimal Lacing
S: Smokey, Mild Caramel, Mild Rye
T: Liquid Smoke, Caramel
M: Poor Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Smokey, Mildly Sweet
Overall, other than the smoke and a caramel character, if there is Rye in this beer, it gets completely masked by the heavy smoke properties. Wasnít a fan.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle into a teku glass. Typical unplugged appearance with the universal Unplugged label, red foil, and Smoked Rye Ale sticker on the neck. Looks like this is from early 2011.
A - Pours a clear dirty red body. The last oz. or so was pretty grimy with sediment. Fingers worth of off white foam. Really nice lacing and retention.
S - Nice balance between smoked malts and caramel sweetness. Maybe a touch of spice and fruit, but this is otherwise pretty much occupied by the smoke and its hard to pick out much more. Smells really nice though.
T - Smoked ham, BBQ sauce, alcohol, and soooome rye spice. Like drinking a beer with a shot of liquid smoke added. Its awfully tasty but holy hell does it get tiring and rich after a while. Mouth feel is rich and creamy. The alcohol creeps up in the end.
O - Not the most smokey beer Iíve had, but probably the richest and meatiest. This is a real winner if you liked smoked beers with notes of meat. After each sip I feel like Iíve been chewing on a bonfire.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20

Clear amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry. Mild carbonated sting in the tail. A reasonable level of smooth smoke. Slightly sweet malt with a little citrus underneath. Semi dry finish. All right.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a medium brown color with rather less carbonation than most beers. The scent will be like roses to those who like to grill out. Almost reminds me of the smell of bacon. Has a good full flavor to it that again reminds me of the taste of a good swine dish. Obviously has a rye taste as well. Is very complex and hard to describe. An absolute most try, especially when grilling out.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle generously sent my way by Neal - thanks! Pours a clear brown with a slick of tan foam. Aroma is meaty with bacon and smoke over some roasted malt and very light malt sweetness in the finish. Taste is fairly smokey with roast and bacon but there is also much more sweetness than the aroma suggests with even some darker fruit notes on the tail end. Clean, slightly coating mouthfeel. Man, this is good!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle pour -caveat up front that Iím not a big smoked beer guy, but Iíve slowly been warming up to appreciating the nuances of the style. Medium brown/amber pour - very thin off-white head that is gone in a few seconds. Aroma, Iím actually really into this - great sweet and smoked combination - lots of smoked malt, pepper/rye, hint of brown sugar. Flavor is, well, good! There is a high level of smokiness to this beer, particularly up front, but a solid malt backbone kicks in to keep this thing level on the choppy seas. Palate feels a bit thin, and the carbonation seems a bit low, but it has a long, smooth finish...would I drink this often, no, but is it a good smoked beer, definitely yes.
