Brown in color with a smaller tan head. Peat, iodine and spicy rye scents. Quite meaty in aroma. Lots of smoked malt flavors. Lightly sweet and a touch tangy. Smooth feel, with just a little zip. 11/10

Bottle from 2011 - thanks to TheAlum! Pours cloudy hazel, small beige head, some lacing. Aroma is wood smoke, a bit of meat, caramel, toffee. Flavor is light plus sweet, light bitter, a hit of smoke up front, meaty, a bit of rye spice. Fullish body, creamy mouthfeel, kinda hot.

Bottle from many years ago that has been sitting in my fridge. Not sure why I hung onto this for so long but I drank the other bottles before I started rating beer. Iíve recently begun to appreciate the smoked style and despite this bottle sitting for so long in my fridge, the smoke is still quite pronounced. Clear dark amber pour with a nice off-white head. Some lacing. Smoky malty nose. Mellow smoky taste with some nice caramel roast in the finish, a hint of sweetness. Really nice, wishing I had some nice BBQ pork to go along with this beer.

Bottled, courtesy Narnad. Pours dark orangey amber with a full, light tan head. Robust smokiness in the aroma with bits of peat and a subtle touch of caramel underneath. Mildly sweet flavor up front that turns slightly grainy as the rye bread flavors come to the forefront. Rather dry finish with a surprising amount of noticeable alcohol. Palate is perhaps a bit thin but helps make this rather thirst quenching and refreshing.

"yum! excellent beer, and I think the best NEW NG offering Iíve had in a while. smokey aroma blends well with sweet carmel malts and a touch of hops and rye. flavor is juuust about as good. mahogony in color. couldnít keep my nose off the glass and it went away too fast. thanks John."

A: Amber/Brownish Hue, Passes Some Light, Thin White Head, Very Minimal Lacing
S: Smokey, Mild Caramel, Mild Rye
T: Liquid Smoke, Caramel
M: Poor Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Smokey, Mildly Sweet
Overall, other than the smoke and a caramel character, if there is Rye in this beer, it gets completely masked by the heavy smoke properties. Wasnít a fan.

12 oz bottle into a teku glass. Typical unplugged appearance with the universal Unplugged label, red foil, and Smoked Rye Ale sticker on the neck. Looks like this is from early 2011.
A - Pours a clear dirty red body. The last oz. or so was pretty grimy with sediment. Fingers worth of off white foam. Really nice lacing and retention.
S - Nice balance between smoked malts and caramel sweetness. Maybe a touch of spice and fruit, but this is otherwise pretty much occupied by the smoke and its hard to pick out much more. Smells really nice though.
T - Smoked ham, BBQ sauce, alcohol, and soooome rye spice. Like drinking a beer with a shot of liquid smoke added. Its awfully tasty but holy hell does it get tiring and rich after a while. Mouth feel is rich and creamy. The alcohol creeps up in the end.
O - Not the most smokey beer Iíve had, but probably the richest and meatiest. This is a real winner if you liked smoked beers with notes of meat. After each sip I feel like Iíve been chewing on a bonfire.

Pours clear dark amber with a small, fizzy off-white head, short retention
with light lacing. Aroma is ash, smoked meat, spicy rye, pear fruity esters, and spicy hops. Flavor is spicy and earthy rye with moderate smoked meat, light fruity esters and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Bottle. Pours mostly clear amber with thin, creamy white head; decent retention and spare lacing. Aroma is smoke, roasted and cookie malts, rye, figs, dates, and floral hops. Flavor is smoke, bready malts, light caramel, floral hops, dark fruit esters, and faint spice; dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation.
