Commercial Description:
Belgian Red is a tapestry of flavor. This beer is brewed with whole Montmorency Cherries, Wisconsin farmed wheat and Belgian roasted barleys, lagered in oak tanks and balanced by Hallertau hops we aged in our brewery one full year. Over a pound of Door County Cherries in every bottle makes this beer uniquely “Wisconsin.” So unique, in fact, that we applied for a patent. Expect this beer to be ruby red, with a medium body that is highly carbonated and intense with cherry flavor and bouquet.

A great presentation right out of the gates with a wax coating the bottle cap. Very dark red appearance with a lot of sediment which poured a light lacy head of foam. Strong aroma of cherries and other fermented goodies. Initial taste of tart cherries, maybe even a slight rhubarb tinge, with a very pleasant and sweet aftertaste. I love this stuff!

Approximately 1.5 oz. sample at the Grand Tasting of the RateBeer Summer Gathering 2007 in the Twin Cities, MN on July 23, 2007. This was the tenth of 26 beers that I sampled and rated during the tasting. I finally got a chance to taste this legend of a beer, and it did not fail to live up to the hype. Extremely tart and extremely strong cherry and cherry pie aroma. Pours a reddish light brown that is mostly clear but ends up rather opaque. Unique, strongly tart, and sour cherry flavor. Tastes like I am drinking cherry pie. Long, fruit-sour aftertaste. Medium body. Smooth, slick, and very lively in the palate. I generally wouldn’t drink this if I were in the mood for a beer. That said, I think I’m going to be in the mood for a New Glarus Belgian Red frequently as long as I can remember how delicious it is.

Bottle, and I’m digging the melted wax around the neck. Red color, pink head that quickly dissipates. As others have pointed out, it has a cherry pie taste, even including crust. This was noticed by some in the group that I had sample it, and one guy even compared it to the flavor of those things that you can buy at convenience stores that are like a hot pocket shape except with fruit jelly on the inside, and probably are 50% high fructose corn syrup. I would never eat one of those today...yet this was a great beer even though I could taste this same thing. Anyway, it was very popular in the mixed Japanese/American party that I brought this to (as was Brooklyn Chocolate Stout); we were rationing it carefully and poured every last drop because everyone liked it so much. Thanks Probiere!!

Pours a dark red with little white head that leaves quickly. Aroma of cherries and cherries. Cherry flavor throughout. Loads of cherries. Very sweet and refreshing.

750 ml via ughsmash - thanks!!! Poured a nice dark ruby red with an intriguing nose of mostly cherries. Well carbonated and fairly thin mouth feel, although it is nice. Flavor is mostly cherries - with a subtle sour/tangy bite on the finish. Reminds me too much of a sweet cherry soda pop - not bad, but nothing amazing. The recipe makes this an interesting beer in its own right. And granted, I don’t have the biggest sweet tooth, but seriously - how is this in the top 50???

Bottle. Full-bodied well balanced beer. Cherry (obvious) aroma. Very easy to drink. Great citric cherry sour flavor.

Bottle, 75cl. (thx to papsoe) Red, almost clear brew with a slightly artificial-feeling cherry nose, followed by almond and sugar. Marzipan, cherry and sugar in the flavor. Full, sticky mouthfeel. Astringent, citric finish with cherry. Too sweet, almondy and artificial-feeling. Unbalanced on the sweet side. Ok, so it’s a nice beer, but I can’t understand why it has so high ratings. (070510)
