Pours a dark black with a large frothy tan head that sticks to the side of the glass. Aroma has a strong piny nose, mild citrus hops in the middle with a nice toasted and roasted malt finish. Some caramel and Munich-like aroma with a light coffee bitter end. Flavor is better as it warms. Starts off with a great toasted malt sweetness with some mild bitter coffee notes right before the hops take over. The bitterness of the malt compliments the piney, resinous from the hops well. A lighter citrus flavor comes in later to help smooth the flavor out. Balanced pretty nicely with a light dryness and low, fine carbonation. Overall not a bad brew. Hops was balanced with the malt quite nicely. For the price, a definite brew I will get again.

Bottle @ the Bent Elbow - poured opaque black - some amber when held to direct light. Decent lasting off white cap. Aromas were PNW - pine, floral-grapefruit, over a nice roasty discernment. Solid chewy body, rich mellow roundness from cold conditioning. Up front you get good balance between sturdy roasty-matiness pushing against a persistent piney-floral hopping - then it goes dry, roasty and lightly bitter in a long silky finish. Very well put together, very drinkable, a good take on the Cascadia dark style.

22 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, 2014 bottling. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine floral, grass, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt flavors; with a nice crisp bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent black IPA. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

22 oz bottle, dated 2014. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet cola with leathery roast and a little pine and fruit.

The flavor is sweet roasted chocolate malts with some fruity piney hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, an OK sweet fruity black IPA.

Bomber. Nose is creamy black malt and light mocha, little bit scorchy but generally I’d count this among the gentler BIPAs; definitely Centennial-heavy, though. Pours very dark brown that we’ll call black in the glass, creamy tan head. Taste very dry with a high resin content, strong bitterness with nothing to balance it out, but clean and with little rubberiness. Pleasant notes of burned wood but no ash, acridity or strong acidity to match. Light roast and dark chocolate otherwise, and no obvious supporting caramel or crystal, but the overall effect is quite ecliptic in its darkness. Otherwise smooth and clean full body, big without any flab, not much carbonation but also far from flat. Hops are somewhat secondary but have good pine/wood levels with less floral and citrus character than expected, but still a good earthy match to the malt side. I generally find this heavy and a bit cumbersome to enjoy at any significant volume, but it works well as a lasting sipper and has me wishing I’d kept some aged cheddar around to rest it on.

[edit -- said that bit about cheddar without looking, honest; they’ve really thought it out well, though, it would be a perfect match!]

Bomber. Roasted malt aroma with pine resin hop notes. Pours black with a good sized light brown head and not a lot of lacing. Good roasted malt flavors to start with subtle hints of chocolate. Finishes dry with a good resiny hop bite at the end. Nice black ipa.

Nice black pour with a thin rocky light beige cap. The nose is murky and roasty with a slight soy sauce tone in it, along with some floral and earthy pine bitterness. Full flavor although too roasty bitter, with earthy pine notes and very little sweetness save for what comes from the black malt. Standard BIPA of the variety that makes me wary of BIPAs.

Bomber bottle poured a clear deep brown hue w/ large frothy tan head and thick sticky lacing. Moderate aroma of dark breads and spicy hops. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish of long duration. Tastes are piney hop, dark bread, and caramelized sugar. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel, and moderate carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
