Transfer from BA review 8-15-12 - Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a deep-deep brown nearly black color with a small tan head. The head faded relatively fast to leave a lighter level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is a combination of hop and dark malt. The hop aromas are mainly of a citrus nature but are mixed with a nice presence of pine as well, with the malt aroma of brown bread and chocolate. Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt flavor of coffee, nut and chocolate mixed with a lighter caramel flavor. While initially the roasted flavors are the alone and heaviest in the taste (although not really “heavy”) they are soon greeted by a surge of some hop flavors. While citrus is the biggest, there are notes of a pine and earthy hop as well. The roasted malt and caramel body at the beginning support the bitter hop flavors rather well.. In the end a roasty and slightly hoppy flavor are left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the light to medium side with the carbonation level being slightly high. A little more body and a little less carbonation would have helped those roasted notes stand out more perhaps, but regardless the feel was not too bad. Overall – A rather nice roasty and chocolaty flavor with some nice hoppy accents. While not the greatest black IPA it is rather tasty.

22oz bomber from Crossroads Spirits. Pours black with 2 fingers of frothy tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, roasted coffee, old grapefruit, and caramel. Taste of dark chocolate, black coffee, burnt sugar, and rotted grapefruit skins. Not bad for a $4.99 bomber.

2014 bomber. Thanks Shawn! Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma is floral pine but with some toasty notes. Taste is fleeting hops at first, then hints of burnt toast and black coffee. Long bitter linger. Slight hop presence. Good beer!

Pours nearly black with a off white head. Aroma is not hoppy and there are very little hops on the palate. I wanted to like this, but was disappointed. No hops taste in this black IPA.

500mL bottle, foil wrap. Vintage 2013. Black pour, light tan foam. Herbal hop aroma, seductive resin nose. Nice roast, burnt character, chocolate, mixed berry esters, lingering pine. Finishes with plenty of hop oils. I think this is my favorite Hatter. (4111)

The color is a clear ruby brown with a large light tan head with good retention, and the aroma blends roasted and dark malts with piney and floral hops. The taste is mildly bitter, slightly sour, a touch sweet, and a touch umami, and the palate fuses a medium-light body, slick and thin texture, bitter finish, and a soft carbonation.

650 ml. 2013 vintage. Black with a thick spongy foam that slowly settles to a lasting eighth inch. Nose is dark toffee with notes of molasses, chocolate, resin, citrus, cherry and plum. Flavors of dark caramel, semi-sweet chocolate, resin, orange, and dark fruits. Light-medium body is watery with a light astringency from the evergreen in the finish. At first had too much fizz for me, but shows a nice balance and drinkability. With possibly up to a year in the bottle, the hops have certainly diminished a bit, but they’re still noticeable. At this age, it tastes like a "session" version of Bigfoot and there’s not a thing wrong with that.

bottle - Pours near black with a one finger tan head. The aroma is mainly of resinous, piney hops. It tastes moderately bitter with soft carbonation and subdued roast malt. It’s medium to full bodied with pleasantly lingering bitterness.

22 oz bottle into a pint glass. The pour is a dark dark brown/light black with solid presences of garnet around the edges. There is a decent light khaki head that falls down to a film, leaving a lightly spotty lace. The aroma is lightly roasty with a nice light caramel body to it. On the back end there is a little more of a light hoppiness and citrus presence. It's surprisingly light and doesn't carry a dominating presence. The flavor is similar. There is a good roasty, hoppy character, but then it falls off in a hurry. The mouth feel is really thin. There is a light carbonation, followed up by a lightly bitter roasty aftertaste that also vanishes quickly. Not very impressed ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
