3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL. for Hatter Days, and served to a NH pint glass with a black/brown color, rocky, deep tan head foam, and draping lace. The nose was toast/light roast, resin, citrus, maple, cocoa, wood, and a slight hint of iodine, which I hope was due to a non-thorough glass rinse. The flavor followed these with the medicinal hint fading, some roasted coffee, a little char, and a healthy dry/bitterness that continued into the finish. Less the small aroma glitch, a very decent IPA variation

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, bottle 12/16/2011. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with very good retention that reduces to a thick cap that lasts. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, caramel, orange, toasted malt, biscuit, light chocolate, and herbal spiciness. Some good aromas here, but they are also very muted. Taste of big grapefruit, caramel, pine, roasted malt, biscuit, orange, light chocolate, and herbal spiciness. Good amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, pine, roasted malt, caramel, and herbal spiciness for a good bit. Some decent flavor balance, but the hops are more prominent in the taste. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol presence is invisible at 5.5%, no warming noticed at all. Overall this is a nice and enjoyable black IPA. Very smooth to drink; with a good amount of flavor and balance.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pour is brown black with a kahki frothy head that dissipates to a film. Aroma is burnt malt with a solid bitter nose. Taste again burnt roasted malt and gritty dirty bitter hops that come off piny. Palate is rather thin and lacking in body but finishes nice chaulky dry. I really like this style, but this one needed a little something to be awesome.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours near black with a 2 finger, creamy tan head. Aroma is mixed berry and tree fruity all over, light roast, char, medicinal notes, chocolate and citrus and pine hops. Flavor is nutty, lots of random fruitmedicinal notes, herbal, pine and citrus hops and an odd metallic note to the finish. light to medium body with an oily entry leading to a watery body and astringent finish with a moderate strength, but blanketing and sharp carbonation. Could be better. Lots of off/out of place flavors.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared at RBWG tasting. Pours a translucent brownish black with thin tan lacy head that sticks slightly on the way down. Aroma of roasted barley and hoppy resins. Taste follows with a quick, bitter finish that is a little thin on the mouth. Not great, but I’d definitely drink it again.

Pretty standard black IPA. Not too much bitterness but not too much of anything.

At Rockwell’s By no means a hop bomb but decently hopped. A little lighter in body than some other IPA but not in a bad way. Some roasted flavor and some coffee flavor. Decent stuff. Serving: Tap

1.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20
Sample at a tasting at IlliniSmitty’s house. Aroma was smoke, sour. flavor was nothing, like dishwater. the color was food coloring or something, certianly not imparting and flavor to this bland, unremarkable brew. Sorry hatter.
