3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 zizzybalubba (1150) - Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA - JUN 14, 2011
22 oz. bottle from SoHo Organic Market in Elizabeth City, NC. Dark brown cola-like pour with a thin khaki head. Really nice aroma of floral and grassy hops with faint chocolate in the background. The flavor seems just a bit off; while there is a good amount of hop bitterness there is virtually no malty roastiness that you would expect. While this is not a bad beer it is not one of the better Black IPAs and not as good as the other beers I have tried in this series.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Nephilium (1148) - Ohio, USA - JUN 11, 2012
(Vintage 2012) This beer starts off with a nice pine hop aroma, which fades to a roasted aroma after several minutes. Pours an opaque black, with ruby highlights when held up to the light, and with a full off-white head. The roasted notes pop up, and are then overpowered by a rush of pine hops, which then fade, and allow the roasted malts to appear again. A bit lighter in the mouthfeel and palate, then I prefer. Overall, this is a nice addition to the Black IPA family, and something worth trying.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jbruner (1114) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - FEB 27, 2013
Bottle shared at RBWG tasting. Pours a translucent brownish black with thin tan lacy head that sticks slightly on the way down. Aroma of roasted barley and hoppy resins. Taste follows with a quick, bitter finish that is a little thin on the mouth. Not great, but I’d definitely drink it again.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 SubstanceT (1092) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - JUN 26, 2006
Black, opaque thin tan head. Nose is sweet and thing. Taste initially sweet with malts and cream then direct bitter but not clearly from the hops. Roasted malts. Good.

Draft - pours dark brown with thin offwhite head. Citrus hops and caramel with toastiness. Bitter with light sweetness. Refreshing with a somewhat dry finish.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MadRobin (982) - Silver Spring, USA - OCT 25, 2012
Poured from 22 oz bottle.
Opaque, very dark brown with tab head and excellent lacing.
Aroma of pine, caramel, roast malt and citrus.
Taste of pine, citrus, dark roasted malt, caramel, sweet chocolate malt, charcoal and licorice. Hops and burnt malt flavors challenge and alternate with each other for dominance.
Medium body and high/medium carbonation.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 demitriustown (975) - Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA - JUN 7, 2012
Bomber: Aroma is a very nicely hoppy, with the slightest bit of malts in the backing. Mostly citrus, grapefruit, and pine are in the initial scent. Appearance is a clear brown with a medium tan head that doesn’t last for long. Taste has got a little bit more of the malt characteristics, a bit of roasted malt, but there is a big prevalent hop note as well. Palate is nicely carbonated, with an aftertaste of lingering bitterness. Cheers!

Pours a very dark black color with a thick tan head that lingers a long time. Spicy hop aroma to go along with some roasted malt. Taste is fairly bitter, spicy, earthy, and roasty. High carbonation. Mostly smooth finish and the earthy hops linger a bit. An above average black ipa to me but not great.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 wavers1 (872) - Notown, California, USA - JUL 17, 2011
thanks for this series ty, fun stuff! pours dark brown with an off white head. the aroma and finish are both liek a lot of other black ipas, very astringent and harsh with burnt dry malts, not my thing. the actual taste and body on this one though are surprisingly good. getting some fruity cutrus notes upfront, some grassier stuff in back. not bad.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 flatmatt (868) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - JUN 2, 2011
22 oz bottle. Pours very deep red with a light tan head. Pine and herbal hop aromas against a nutty, roasty malt background. Flavor has pine and citrus with roasted, smoky malts. Kind of tastes soggy, if that makes sense. Just doesn’t work out for me. Somewhat disappointing.
