2011 vintage: Drank from a pint glass poured from a large bottle. Pours a nice dark brown color, zero head :( Aromas of smoke and rye, taste was a little much on the smokiness and rye.

Tap: Dark mahogany & woody-brown color with some ruby at the edges. Dark-tan head that also shows a slight ruby tint. Decent retention, some wet lacing... Good looking beer. The smoked malts are heavy on the nose; liquid smoke, charcoal, campfire woodsiness, peat. Once you get used to the smoke, the doppelbock characteristics pop out a bit more. Faint molasses, dark fruit, burnt caramel, & a hint of woodsy salt. First sip has lots of liquid smoke & char up front, fading into a more sweet profile with molasses, prune, toffee, & toasted nuts. On the palate the smoke has a more "meaty" vibe than the aroma, giving off flavors of bacon & smoked ham. Mild earthy spice & bitterness towards the finish which may be from the rye as well. Medium body, lower carbonation, slick mouth feel. I might be slightly biased, as I love smoked things. This was pretty tasty. The heavy smoke can wear down your palate, but the 8 oz snifter I had was just fine.

Draft. A NH beer I always have seemed to pass up. It is nice though, not too hot doggy like some of the style Iíve been trying recently. Very much more brown aley than most doppelbocks.

Brown pour with minimal head. Big smokey aromas. Flavor is smokey rye with notes of molasses and toasted cherry. Very interesting. Didnít get to try it with any food but I bet it would go really well with cheeses or grilled meat. Solid offering.

Bomber shared. Pours medium brown with red tints. Aroma is definite smoke, lots of malt, molasses and caramel. The flavor is unique with plenty of smoke and malts and the spicy of the rye. Lots going on here but flavor is distinctive. The molasses blends with the smoke and the cherry comes out. Overall different but very good.

growler into Le Guinness Dimpled Mug - Nose is smoky. Sweet and boozy upfront. More smoke and I love it. Lots of sweet malts whatever they are named, but I shall relay my adumbration: caramel syrup with Belgian candy and whiskey. Dry to the lips. I might just go make a ham sandwich to go along with this. A pleasant surprise and glad to not see the silly hats on the label.

Taster on tap at Luckyís. 1 ounce or less.. Clear dark red color. No head or lace. Kind of mahogany colored. Lots of peat, smoke in the aroma. Medium to bigger body, kind of full. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Sort of slick. Good long peaty aftertaste. Moderate sweet taste, nice light warmth to it. Light to moderate bitter. Hints of dark fruit. Nice smokey doppelbock, though I donít pick up much rye from this tiny taster.

RBWG14 Trip Rating#165. Bottle shared at the Downtown Inn Saturday PM Bottle Share. Pours a dark red color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffee, smoke, rye, raisin. The taste is smoke, brandy, rye. Medium bodied, disjointed.
