4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A: Pours black with a finger of tan head that fades into a frothy ring with a little lacing. S: Roasted malts, semi-sweet cocoa, and vanilla dominate with some oak and bourbon aromas underneath. T: Roasted malts here as well with some dark chocolate and vanilla flavors. The oak and bourbon are more present in the flavor with some notes of burnt sugar and caramel. The finish is lightly boozy. M: Medium-thick body with moderate carbonation, this beer is a bit more carbonated and lighter in body than many barrel aged stouts, but it avoids being overly carbonated or too watery. O: An enjoyable beer overall and one of the more underrated stouts out there. It's not really on the same level as the best barrel aged stouts, but it's also a lot more reasonably priced and accessible than most examples.

12oz bottle. A lot of vanilla on the front with a lot of bourbon on the back. Great beer if you do not like sweet. But don't enjoy to many too fast...

Bottle....pungent oak aroma mixed with a sweet candied malt...its dark brown...appears black...oak apparent in the taste as well...the dragon dipped its teat in vanilla and took a nap in an oak barrel after a meal of malt balls!

12 oz bottle into tulip. Dark, nice tan lacing and some persistent head. Aroma is vanilla, cherry, caramel. Tastes roasty vanilla bourbon, cherry and plum, malt with some hop echoes. Maybe too hoppy, maybe too thin - those factors set it apart from more celebrated BBA stouts.

Bottle. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Smells of chocolate, toffee, and alcohol. Medium body and creamy texture. Very sweet up front with nice alcohol warmth that lingers for a while. Hints of oak and bourbon with a tinge of hoppy bitterness. One of my favorites!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2014 poured from bote to glass. Dark hue with creamy brown hue that dissipated to a medium ring. Aroma is chocolate, toffee, caramel, roastiness, vanilla, oak. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium full body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet (but not cloying) with a nice roasted following and slight ethanol finish. Overall this is a VERY good and well balanced brew!

650 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a ruby-tinged dark brown with good-sized, creamy, lacey light tan head. Aroma is roasty, dark malts, dark fruit, oak and bourbon. Flavour has fair amount of oaky, vanillay barrel, a solid treacley , roasty dark malt, a bit of brown sugar and dark fruit and hints of bourbon. Silky mouthfeel. Impressive.

Seeing that I am Dragon Born, it makes sense to pull this from the LCBO shelf. It makes even more sense after seeing the high ratings here. And yet ... Is it maybe a little over rated by some on here? Pours oil spill black with a super thin cap that fades quicker than my drinking buddyís hairline. The booze is stealthy & the barrel is balanced & the malts are a little too sugary. Almost tastes like a weak pour of Jim Beam dumped into a glass of flat cola. Once again, Iíd love to know where they source the barrels but like most brewers they donít bother. Anyone know?

Solid. Seems like good value for the price. Like a BA Old Rasputin-lite. Thin body.
