gotohelunc (310), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Mar 20, 2008 Bottle. Dark, near black with some redness in the light. Not much visible carbonation, just some big soapy bubbles. Very smokey aroma. Some nuts, chocolate powder. Similar flavors of smoke, chocolate, and some bourbon. Sticky in the mouth. Definitely a unique beer, and outside of the appearance, it’s wonderful stuff.
flatmatt (39), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA Jul 7, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours deep red, approaching black, with a small light tan head that dissipates quickly. No real lacing. Very nice aroma of rich dark fruits, bitter chocolate, sweet caramel. Flavor is dark fruits and caramel, dark chocolate. A bit of lingering roasty malt. Somewhat weaker flavor than I was expecting based on the aroma. A little undercarbonated. timsilvia32 (41), born in Michigan, North Carolina, USA Jul 6, 2008 Dark red/brown pour, almost no head to it. Not a strong aroma, slight coffee and toffe. Pretty malty with carmel and slight chocolate. Nice warming going down, 9% abv not offensive at all. Had some other bourbon barrel aged beers, I don’t get much in this one from oak barrel.. Reminds me of Highland Brewing’s Tasgall Ale. Not bad at all though. drewbeerme (1664), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 6, 2008 on tap at NH brewpub. pours dark red-brown with small white head. aroma is roasty, coffee. flavor is chocolate, coffee, caramel, oak. a bit hot, med body. a bit prickly. not too shabby. kmweaver (1770), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jul 3, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours a murky, cola-brown color; khaki-colored head with decent retention and mixed-bubbled lacing. Kind of a relaxed aroma: toasty, burnt wood, hints of bourbon and scotch; some toastiness, but muddled overall. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: toasty vanilla-laden oak and light bourbon notes; milk chocolate, roasted malts, and some bitter coffee notes; very relaxed carbonation; muddled flavor notes overall, though nothing astringent or rough coming through from the barrel character; toasty, basic maltiness; a bit of alcohol showing throughout. Medium finish: coffee, bitter and milk chocolate, and some toasty breadiness; not a lot of barrel character coming through in the end. mdm46410 (504), Griffith, Indiana, USA Jul 1, 2008 On tap at New Holland and served in a snifter. This beer poured a dark brown with a thin head of tan foam. Some slippery lacing was left around the glass. The aroma of the beer was made up of chocolate, wood, and some mild alcohol. The flavor consisted of bittersweet chocolate, burnt malts, some mild vanilla and oak, and also a mellow note of bourbon. The mouthfeel was full-bodied with minimal carbonation. A dangerously drinkable high-gravity brew.
