COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Consider it an extremely hoppy barleywine, or a really big IPA. Either way, ten hop additions contribute to its lush and intriguing body. Aggressive dry-hopping brings a strong citrus character to the aroma. The flavor and smell of orange-blossoms pervade throughout the experience.
Ingredience:Water,Barley(200 pounds per barrel of American-grown malted barley),Hops(10 hop-strikes,totaling 17 ounces per barrel of American-grown hops) and yeast(it is what it is).

Old rate. Pours a clear orange/amber, head is thick and persistent. Aroma has caramel, dark fruit, some floral and citrus hops. Thick mouthfeel, boozy. Flavour is very assertively hoppy and lingering...is this an IIPA or a BW? The line here is a bit blurred but I think it lends itself more to the prior and less to the later. Still, decent.

Pours amber with an off-white head. Bitter with some sweetness. Aromas of caramel and milk chocolate. Almost no aromas hops but lots of bittering hops. Hints of nuts and slightly toasted malts.

Pours deep amber with stark white head, aroma is big citrusy hops complemented by a big blast of caramel and biscuit. Thought this was a IIPA as well, but upon seeing it as a barleywine it fits more true to style. Citrus, candied orange and tangerine up front lead into a big overpowering malt middle with caramel and biscuit, and finishes bitter. Pretty good, but for a "hopwine" I expected more hop character.

Upon ordering this, I was under the impression that it was an IIPA. Now seeing that its a BW, my following notes make a bit more sense: This is a malt bomb, with a prominent soy quality in both the aroma and flavor. I am really anti-soy in beer. The alcohol definitely shines through quite a bit too. A nice appearance and full bodied mouth feel, but not good enough to compensate for the soy in the flavor. The most annoying part about this beer is its misleading name and label. Maybe they put a bunch of hops in here, but its all pretty relative when they put sooo much malt and left so many residual sugars to completely outweigh whatever hops they did include. For me, this is an example of a beer over done.

Draft @ Smallbar Wicker Park, Chicago, IL. Pours an amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty dark fruit aroma with hoppy hints. Fruity malty hoppy flavor with hints of caramel and dark fruit. Has a sweetish malty hoppy finish with some bitterness and some hints of caramel in the aftertaste.

Cloudy amber, No Head but some lacing, plenty of hops and cotten candy odor. tastes quite sweet with molasses. Hops are dominated. Quite a nice effort with wheat though.

Enjoyed via draft in a whiskey snifter. The beer pours a relatively light amber color, with a just-off-white head. The aroma brings strong malt characters, with an especially prevalent nod going to Munich malt. The beer smells almost like a Great Lakes Elliot Ness on steroids. I was surpised, however, by the lack of hop aroma and character throughout the beer. The palate was similar to the nose; strongly malt-centric. Again, a lot of continental character malt makes its presence known. Hops do provide a noticeable bitterness to the beer, but it is ultimatley drowned out by the aforementioned malt sweetness. The finish is fairly clean, and contains a surprisingly subtle note of alcohol. Ultimatley, a well-made, if slightly confusingly advertised, strong ale.

11th October 2008. GABF. Clear gold beer. Aromatic hops nose. A full on barleywine but with an unusual floralness about it. Unusually intense flavour.
