Really wanted to like this but really didn't. Overpowering licorice taste just ruined it. Weird beer.

12 oz bottle, pours a surprising dark with a deep fluffy tan head. aroma of acidity, toast and caramel, and roasted barley. not as much "tang" as i expected from something labeled saison, but perhaps the dark malts are overpowering it somewhat. flavor is toffee and straw and peppery rye, and strawberries and licorice. an interesting beer to be sure, but kind of lacking direction.

On tap at the Knick. Roasted malt and biscuit, toffee and Twizzlers. A bit of licorice. Sweet nose. Dark brown-black opaque with thin light tan lacing head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts sweet with molasses and Twizzlers, light licorice, and mild fruity notes. A bit of alcohol. Nutty sweet bitterness at finish with a little bit of sweet tang. Smooth sweet after.

Unique, but something I could not drink much of. Black, very dry. Like the base for something that had to be added. Aroma was OK. FlandersNed.

Black color, eggshell head. Nose is light perfumed fruit with a roasty flavor. Juicy flavor that doesn’t match the appearance.

12oz bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Black saisons can certainly be satisfying and interesting, though it’s admittedly tough to pull off. This one, alas, isn’t even close to either mark (you could, I suppose, make a case for interestingly awful). Dark brown cola pour, excessive carbonation for sure. Strong, sharp anise in the nose, along with root beer, something burnt, and generic spice. Mouthfeel? Sure I’ll give the beer that one. But the taste is pretty awful, with the best moments coming when the beer is merely one-dimensional licorice. Beyond that, we have ash cola, burnt fruitbread, and lozenge. Oof.

Had a 5 oz taster on draft. Dark colored but very light in the body. Smelled good but didn’t taste that way. Fruity and anise. Couldn’t finish the 5oz. Not to happy with this one.

Dark brown/black beer with decent amount of carbonation and large heard that hangs around for a while. Head is light brown in color. Nose has a funk to it combined with a bit of rye malt and licorice. Taste is pure anise, just too much, lacking complexity. Some darker malts come through at the very end. Underwhelmed by this one.
