4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
As good as Dupont. A phenomenal example of the style. Wonderfully effervescent, nice smooth mouthfeel and an excellent hop to malt balance. Not overly spicy or sweet like some other brewers attempts at the style. Hats off to the guys at New Holland.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Backlog rating 1-27-2009 (Bottle) This beer pours a medium sized white fizzy frothy head that has pour retention, slightly hazy body, fair amount of lacing, lively carbonation, and the hue of the body is pale yellow. The Aroma is coriander, wheat, fruity, malty, and biscuits. This beer tastes sweet, spicy, fruity, and wheat. The Palate is tingly and this is a light-medium bodied beer. This beer is quaffable and refreshing and would be a beer I would consider drinking in the summer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at craft ale house. Pours hazy yellow with a big white head. There is tons of carbonation in the glass. The aroma has a ton of sweet citrus fruit, almost like a juice box. The taste has a nice hop kick and a dry, lemon finish. There is a bit of pepper spice.

12 oz. Bottle. Not a bad saison, and a great price. Banana scent, spice, peppercorn, hay. Hazy gold pour with a foamy white head and lots of floaties. Light body with a frothy feel. Hay to pepper to banana to spice flavor, clove, and a sweet tangy finish.

At the brewery, light and refreshing saison, straw yellow color. Yeasty and citrusy. A fairly good saison. Nothing special.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz. bottle. Sharp, citrus-y (lemon), salty aroma with a finish to the nose that charitably can be described as “vegetal” and less charitably can be described as having the qualities of compost. Wheat-esque smell, but there are differences from the aromas typical of actual wheat brews, presumably because the grain used is not wheat but spelt (by the way, the style arguably should be listed as “specialty grain” instead of “saison” due to the spelt). Interesting smell, certainly. Pours a mostly clear, effervescent, pale gold. There is a very slight haze with a small amount of suspended particulate. Large amount of appetizing, long-lasting, fluffy, thick, uneven, light cream-colored head. Produces good lacing. Dry, mineral-y, citrus-y, bitter, astringent taste. Much sharper taste than would be present in a wheat beer. Definitely falls into the dry variety of saisons, not the fruity/juicy variety. A touch of vomit in the aroma and flavor, unfortunately, but not enough fully to ruin the beer. Meaty taste with a pencil element (both wood chips and graphite). The flavor mellows upon multiple sips, bringing out an orange creamsicle quality. Strong, dry, bitter aftertaste. Light body. Smoothly watery in the palate. New Holland Golden Cap Saison Ale is a unique beer that I’m glad I got to try. It’s not a great beer, but it’s a good enough one that brings something different to the table, despite a couple of off-putting elements.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
An okay saison. Nothing exceptional, and the lack of a substantive yeasty farmhouse kick is a bit of a disappointment. Tropical fruitiness, some mild hoppiness. Tried with Nick at the brewery in 2012.
