Bottle shared by Jeff during the opening night of the RBSG, thanks for all the effort and the great beers you shared! Poured a cloudy amber brown with a yellowish brown head that was thick and lasted. Aroma was quite tart/sour with cherries mainly and there was a backing caramel and toffee note. Flavor was similar with a sour overtone, mainly cherries with caramel and toffee backing.

750 ml shared by northerbrews. Thanks! Amazing share! Pours a deep dark brownish red hue, dark and hazy, a nice frothy offwhite towards tan head laces well. Aromas are caramel and toffee, sour cherries, a decent nice sourness and touch of lactic acid. Initial is similar, light tartness. Decent sour, tasty with caramel and biscuits with with sour cherries. Lingering bread and biscuits. A lighter but decent sour. Not bad fairly sweet still even with time.. Kinda has that typical New Holland sour lightness and still fairly biscuity. Not bad, just not very sour

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty and slightly tart aroma. Sweetish fruity malty dark fruit flavor with some sour hints. Has a sweetish malty sour tart finish with hints of dark fruit in the aftertaste.

12/15/2007: New Holland Moxie Sour Ale pours deep amber, is transparent, and doesn’t have any foam on its surface. It has a caramel aroma with hints of oak and vanilla. The flavor contains some dry Scotch with a slight amount of smoke and a bit of sourness in the finish. This beer is medium-bodied and is smooth and feels almost creamy. Overall it is very Belgian-like and is not overly sour.
750 mL corked and caged bottle. Rating #51 for this beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 chicagodri (1683) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 3, 2009
I seriously forgot I had this beer in the cellar and since the cellar is getting emptied...time to rate. Pours a cloudy amber with a thin off white head. Odd beer. Aroma of dark fruit, malt, and some light sour funk. The beer is tart and slightly sour, but I think the caramel malt really wins out. Interesting beer though, glad I was able to try it.

Bottle I got via trade a ways back. Originally was going to bring this to a tasting and that didn’t happen. Shared with my gf Cyn and bikesandbeer. Finally a decent beer tonight. Pours dark orange with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and tart with a bit of sour. Taste is sour malted with a lingering malty caramel taste. This is certainly above average. It’s a decent sour.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 kramer (3880) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 19, 2008
25 oz bottle, shared by CharlesDarwin. Pours a cloudy dark amber body with a small fizzy off-white head that faded fairly quickly. The nose is both tart and sweet at the same time, just a little acidity with a bigger backdrop of fruity caramel malt. The flavor is moderately sour and funky with a slightly biting acidity over heavy fruity malt. some light oak tannins throughout. Leaves a lingering sticky sweet caramel flavor that isn’t quite balanced with the sourness. Mouthfeel is fairly thick with a good bit of stickiness. Nice soft carbonation. Tasty, but indeed an odd beer.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 auerbrau (2953) - Peace Dale, Rhode Island, USA - APR 6, 2008
750mL Bottle. A distinct caramel nose, backed with a light and confusing run of sour acidity, sweetness and faint oxidation. Pours a reddish caramel, with paler corners and a whitish rim. Flavor is interesting. Tangy and yet with toffee and darker malts. There’s a density of heavier sugar magnitude and coffees. This conflicts with the characteristic flemish sour type acid. No acetic. But, this is like two beers mixed together. The heavy residual sugars don’t blend well with the acid. Chewy. Not unclean, or off, just a weird combination of malt bill and sourness. The individual flavors are nice, but don’t blend well. For a Sour Ale, it’s a pretty good Barleywine. Thanks Sean for supplying this rare sour!
