Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

Bottle: Pours a dark amber with no head. Heavy aroma of hops. Sweet tasting with heavy hops and alcohol. Not bad.

Bottle pours a clear amber with a small off white lacing head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Taste starts out very sweet with hint of caramel, butterscotch, malts and raisins. Finishes slightly bitter with a good alcohol burn.

Had this in the special education tent where all of the New Holland beers were served with chocolate. I swear I had given up on New Holland, but this beer was good, as New Holland seems to do alright with their higher gravity beers. Really paired well with the chocolate truffle (which had a salty component to it). Very nice wheat wine here. Strong raisin, and grainy hops.

Kind of a reddish amber pour with some white head. Aroma of citrus, cherries, honey, almonds with wheat and hop notes notes. Tastes sweet and nutty with some biscuits, the honey and almonds tones are especially noticeable, along with the wheat malt. The mouthfeel is syrupy, sticky. Dry alcohol finish.

I actually liked this one a lot. My GF picked it up on a whim. This one pours a nice creamy orange, with some dark undercurrents. Lots of nice malt and wheat in this one, backed by a citrusy hop character. Some notes of fruit, slight grapefruit and maybe cherries. Lots of yeast. The aroma leaves a little to be desired, but really, who cares when the beer is good?

Small sample from the bottle. Consumed during the New Holland beer and chocolate pairing at Great Taste of the Midwest on 8-9-2008. Pours a clear near-orange with near-white head. Light aroma features a sherry-like scent. Nice, sweet, floral taste contains raisin flavor and fruity bitterness. Thick and slick in the palate. Quite good.

Poured a cloudy orange with an off white head. Aroma was very sweet and malty with some alcohol showing through. Flavor was lighter than expected, i guess due to the wheat, but still very sweet and does not cover up the alcohol very well at all.

22. Screenprinted bottle, a year or two old or so at this tasting. Crystal clear dark amber. Headless. Enormously sweet nose--orangey wheat aroma that’s just ballistic. Attractive, but out of balance even after decanting a bit. Creamy, thick, sticky body. Orangey, biscuity, twangy. Way too much but oddly satisfying--for all its quirks we still finished the bottle before opening anything else.
