ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Feb 24, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, dark copper body with a small, bubbly, off-white head. How lovely looking!
Smell: Sweet-smelling aroma of malted wheat and toffee syrup with a light booziness and faint fruity notes.
Taste: Deep, resounding toffee-flavored sweetness and tangy malted wheat flavor. A dash of Navan vanilla cognac. Light hint of fruit. A slight touch of alcoholic heat on the sweet, luscious finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Velvety mouthfeel. Warming alcohol presence.
Drinkability: Though it can be a bit hefty on the palate at times, New Holland has crafted an excellent wheatwine. JMerritt (1313), Macomb, Illinois, USA Feb 13, 2008 Clear, orange with pink hues and a small, thin white ring of a head around the rim of the glass. Sweet, syrupy thick aroma with definite notes of apricot and an ever-so-slight alcohol burn. Toffee/caramel maltiness lends a smooth undertone. Moderately sweet, moderately bitter flavor at first, turning cloyingly sweet and metallic towards the finish. Aftertaste is grainy, notes of popcorn and medicinal cleansiness. Sweetness in the finish is rather offputting - definitely not a pleasant sweet flavor. brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Feb 11, 2008 Pours dark copper with a ruby tinge. Perfectly clear at cellar temperature, and a thin cap of white foam barely covered the surface.
Aromatics have plenty of caramel, toffee, and alcohol.
Pretty straightforward in the nose with some subtle fruit, and a mild spicyness.
The mouthfeel is on the sticky side of medium, lightly crisp and tacky.
The pallet is fairly malty for a wheatwine, with caramel bits and lingering crystle malt.
Alcohol has quite a presense as well as the bittering hops. Firmly bitter with earthy undertones. A bit peppery and hot.
The 10% ABV is not being shy.
Finishes with plenty of warming fusels, cracked toffee, and heat on the back of the tongue.
bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA Feb 1, 2008 Had this one on tap at mad mex. Poured a light brown amber color. Aroma was of a lot of whiskey first of all which i was suprised by. Had a little maltiness to back it up but this seemed like it had to have been aged in some kind of barrel. Maybe i was given the wrong beer or something but this really seemed like drinking some jack daniels. Zinister (1198), Houston, Texas, USA Jan 31, 2008 Poured at the 1/28 Houston tasting. Pours a clear red ale with a frothy white head. Aroma of sweet hops with sweet malts. Taste is pretty high alcohol with a medicinal, clove flavor that is very one-dimensional. theisti (1638), Leawood, Kansas, USA Jan 31, 2008 Updated: Jul 14, 2008+++RE RATE 12-Jul-08+++ 22 oz bottle shared by csbosox. Pour is golden orange brown with a very thin off white head. Aroma strong full booziness, strong orange citrus. Caramel maltiness. Some smoky grassiness underneath. Taste is full, dripping with nectar sweetness, burnt caramel and a pretty big shot of booze at the end. Palate is full, wheat is evident in the aftertaste. This had improved a bit from last rating (7,3,7,4,14 - 3.5) Thanks for sharing this Chris.
