Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

12oz bottle shared courtesy of weeare138. Poured a medium to deeper amberish / orange color with a small sized off white head. Lots of small suspended floaters. Aromas of caramel, yeast, and dark fruits. Tastes of caramel, nutty, dark fruits, and oranges. Alcohol content well hidden.

Clear ruby color with a small tan head. Aroma is very sweet and malty with butter and some alcohol. Flavor of very sweet malts with a long buttery finish. Pretty bad.

Bomber (picked up in Ann Arbor, MI March, 2007) pours clear copper with tan head. The aroma is sweet with notes of fruit like dates, plums, raisins and ripe cherries. There’s also creamy toffee and caramel sweetness along with slight hay component that must be the wheat. Smells terrific. Wow, first taste is just about as good as it smells. There are hints of alcohol that hit upfront and ride to the finish with some warming sensations that are a bit too strong and detract some from the experience. On the good side are the tasty fruity notes of cherries, raisins, dates and prunes. The malts come off just as they smell in the nose with sweet caramel candy, toffee and hints of wheat. Maybe this needs more cellaring to even out the slightly high alcohol influence. Very enjoyable now and is one of those beers I’m glad comes in a bomber.

Thin head, pours a reddish/brown. From a 22 oz bottle. Aroma is sweet with just a little of a strong booze smell coming through. Good flavor, well balanced, but just a little thin. I enjoyed it.

Beautiful ruby color with very small diminishing tan head and no lacing. Aroma has very strong malt and whiskey notes. Intense whiskey flavor, with caramel malts, spiciness and light hops. This is a really unique brew with a great flavor.

22 oz bottle. Poured a very fizzy dark amber with a thin light tan head, no lacing. Aroma was rich and sweet. Bittersweet flavor with a lingering dry bitterness and alcohol warmness. An odd grainy flavor that seemed a bit off. Thin palate.

Had a few different vintages at New Holland. I believe an 05’ and an 03’. I think this beer was made to lay down for a few years. Poured a nice burnt orange color. Taste is nice and rounded. Full and big with the 50% wheat seeming to smooth everything out, still nice hops in the background, caramel, toasted grain with a hint of vanilla. This paired great with the pilgrims dole infused chocolate they served. Re-rate: tried a fresh batch on tap at crunchys. This was way different than the aged versions. Not nearly as good. Big caramel, brown sugar, overly ripe dark fruit. Leaves an unpleasant after taste.
