Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

(Bottle) Pours a clear mahogany body with a small beige head. Aroma of wood, caramel, and fruitness. Flavor of chocolate, spices, and breadiness with an incredible creamy mouthfeel.

My 22 oz. bottle looked completely different. It made mention of it use of wheat, making it quite a unique barley wine style. Poured a dark mahogany with thin head and good lacing. Aroma was malty, alcohol and caramel. Flavor was wheat, caramel malt, a bourbon-like alcohol warmth and a dry hop finish. Full flavored, medium body. Pretty good brew that will kick your ass a bit, too.

Had on tap at New Holland and loved it. A strong alcohol smell and taste. Amber coloring with a very small off-white head.

22 oz bomber. Pours a medium copper with a slight head. Nose is boozey, baked bread, burnt caramel, burnt crust. Mouthfeel is full. The ABV is definately there. Taste is pretty one dimensional of Booze, homemade bread with burnt crust. As it warmed it turned to a watery version of a cheap whiskey, left the lips sticky. IMO,a bomber is too much for 1 person as the finish, both cool and warmer was a bit harsh. Prob better in the 4 pack.

Sampled at DLD. Pours a clear amber with a white head. Chocolate, toffee, carmel, fruit, and hops in the nose. The flavor is similar with candied sugars. Kinda funky with a sour vinegar tinge to it that I’m getting sick of quick.

Pours amber/orange with a small head that dissipated disturbingly fast. Aroma of toffee and light apple vinegar. Taste was surprisingly fruity; strawberries, if you can believe that! Also some caramel and wheat. Alcohol was well covered. Mostly sour flavor, with a sweet finish. Unique.

Courtesy sprinkle. Lightly hazy bronze/amber topped by a small, dense, off white head. Nose of heavy malt- wheat and barley, past ripe fruits still on the tree, earth, sharp (but not overpowering at all, a nice compliment) yeast, subtle alcohol warmth and sourness. Same flavors with a bit of richness, some earthy and bitter hops, even more sourness- of the tangy variety, and zesty, nearly peppery yeast. Full body, balanced- creamy yet foamy. Has a similar tang to that of the Dragon’s Milk, only this time it matches better. Definitely some funky cheese in the aroma now, though. Could be oxidized or infected, first time having this brew so I’m not sure. I’d definitely drink it again, even if only for comparison.
