Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

Courtesy sprinkle. Lightly hazy bronze/amber topped by a small, dense, off white head. Nose of heavy malt- wheat and barley, past ripe fruits still on the tree, earth, sharp (but not overpowering at all, a nice compliment) yeast, subtle alcohol warmth and sourness. Same flavors with a bit of richness, some earthy and bitter hops, even more sourness- of the tangy variety, and zesty, nearly peppery yeast. Full body, balanced- creamy yet foamy. Has a similar tang to that of the Dragon’s Milk, only this time it matches better. Definitely some funky cheese in the aroma now, though. Could be oxidized or infected, first time having this brew so I’m not sure. I’d definitely drink it again, even if only for comparison.

Pours a deep copperish amber with a small off white head. The aroma is very malty with notes of caramel, fruiut, and wheat. Flavor is full bodied with a deep maltiness of caramel and fruit.

12 oz bottle, via trade. Pours a clear copper colored body under a minimal fizzy beige head that faded to a thin ring. Sparce visible carbonation present. The nose is huge overpowering alcohol fumes first off. Lots of heavy syrupy toffee and caramel malt with some fruitiness. Flavor has a disturbing sour tinge to it, acidic and vinegar like. Still lots of alcohol, especially on the finish. Some toffee does peek through, but definately not enough. Finishes with lots of bready and doughy malt. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy with minimal carbonation. Rather sticky and cloying on the finish. Overall, another very disappointing brew from New Holland. I’m beginning to see a pattern with them.

A nice winter treat. Fairly ligght for a barleywine whe poured. Very sweet filled with a fruit and citrus on the first smell. First taste will stike you a tame and sweet. Aftertaste is where the alcohol is sensed as it does come up and let its presence be known. I think this is a fine interpretation of a barleywine and would recomend this to anyone looking for a change of pace.

Pours a fairly clear copper color with a quarter inch head that reduces to a ring and film. Good enough lacing, however. Mild fruity citrus aroma. Dry and tangy malt flavors - wheat is noticeably present, as is lots of cereal grain. Almost the same start to finish, with an almost lager-like character to it. In fact, it reminds me a little of Molson Brador back in the day. A little spicy hops in the finish. Tart and hoppy aftertaste. Full bodied, mild carbonation.

Pours a slightly hazy, bright copper color with a quarter inch head that fades quickly to a spotty cap and nice ring. Said ring leaves a pretty nice amount of lace behind. Smell; floral and picy upfront, with a fairly strong wheat presence in the nose. There’s a bit of a fruity presence. Taste; fruity melons and some flavors that remind me of rum raisin bread. The wheaty flavors are there, along with a nice spicy flavor as well as a lingering sweetness with an alcohol bite mixed in. Mouthfeel is very thick and slighty syrupy, but not so much that it becomes distracting. I’ve had this on tap at the brewpub before and really liked. I didn’t know how this would hold up in the bottle, but I think New Holland did a fine job with this one.
