Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

Pour is bright mellon with a thin ring of creamy bubbles. I belive my first wheatwine. Tangy aroma. Almost soured grain. Flavor is a bit sour with a wheaty harsh finish. Tangy again.

purchased while in Michigan over the ’05 holidays... pours orangish amber with slight white head. hints of grass and moss in the aroma. flavor screams very tart apple cider. notes of sweetness come through, i’m lead to think caramel typically... but the tartness makes me think of citrus. honestly... this doesn’t really seem like a wheatwine. my first taste i literally said : ’Rodenbach’. it tastes a lot like a flemish sour. good beer, not a daily drinker, but an interesting one to pull out and let some beer nerds try.

orange with a white head that disappears quickly. very funky aroma. sweet apple cider mixed with some barnyard funk. flavor dominated by apple tartness with a slight hint of caramel sweetness from the wheat and malt. finish dry and tart. medium bodied. seems light for the style. i enjoyed this brew but it just wasnt as good as some of the other wheat wines i have had. enjoyable but one dimensional.

My rating may very well do this beer no justice at all, as I am not an avid barley wine drinker. But it did taste good to me.

a bit dark in color, easy pour, very unique flavor not drowned out by the alcohol content, or wait, yes it was. leaves a weird taste in your mouth

Original Rating, Mar 26, 2006: Cloudy brown color with no head. Aroma is very much like sweet wheat, however that works. Some alcohol noticeable, but not much. Well the flavors stay the same in the taste with it turning out like a very alcoholic wheat mash. Okay, but not my favorite. 7/3/6/3/13 Re-Rating, November 21, 2008: So something has changed drastically with this one. Dark copper color with a thin head. Caramel, brown sugar, alcohol, and a maple sugar like aroma. Strong, sweet malt taste, followed by vanilla, oak, light salt, maple, wheat and a minerality that is hard to pin down. Really, really freakin good.

Well it seems that I will be going aginst the grain on this one 12 oz Bottle 2004 vintage, Pours a pale gold to copper with a quick fizzle of a off white head . The aroma impressed me Spice honey pear sour apple and malt with some lcohol in there. Flavor was sweet with citrus and pear light alcohol feel to it. Flavor had a sour apple finish to it. Quite unique for a barley wine it seemed to lack a little body but made up for it in other areas..

This beer offers an aroma of sour mash and nuts. It is a nice hearty copper color with hardly no head at all. This moderately thick beer is very sour and bitter as it produces a vinegar taste on the palate.
