MaiBockAddict (1499), Good Beer Bar Deprived, New Jersey, USA Sep 28, 2005 Bottle. Clear copper, floaties, thin tan head. Decent maple syrup malty spucy aged barleywine aroma. Malty flaovrs with a hint of sharp hops, but the malt is not complimenting the hops the way I like. Very fruity yet oddly not meshing right. Thick malts, but the malt flavors do not linger. Needs something but not sure what. Makes me think when I want to drink. TheEnemy (422), Chicago, USA Aug 19, 2005 Updated: Sep 7, 2005Nice hazy-aurburn color with almost no head but nonetheless with decent brussels lace clinging to the sides of the glass. Awful cooked-cabbage aroma. Acetic apple-cider flavor dominates almost like it was oak-aged -- wheat, perhaps? (Is there such a thing as a wheat barleywine?) Some hop spiciness eventually comes through. A bit sticky on the tongue. Intriguing beer, but if this is a barleywine, I’m thin and pretty. richlikebeer (823), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 26, 2005 a reddish orange with a soapy white head, big aroma, but not that pleasant of one, yeast and vinegar. cloyingly sweet flavor with a strong sour apple tail. bitter on the aftertaste as well as strong in the abv department. not gonna make my list of even decent barley wines. ToadMan (554), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jun 10, 2005 Medium dark copper with ruby linning, a small head and very nice lace. Aroma is yeasty and doughy with sour apple tones. Flavor is appley with light bitterness, fairly sweet, lots of wheat, lightly yeasty, quite sour, almost like a lambic. Flavors realy come out and together as it warms (it was much much better after leaving it out for a bit), becomes less appley and sour and more doughy. Nice alcohol presence throughout. 1FastSTi (2551), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Jun 8, 2005 Poured to a beautiful golden color with a thin quickly but not fully disapating head with good lacing. Very malty aroma with grape soda playdoh hints. The flavor is of dried pineapple slices and wheat with a touch of lemon and pear. The palate is pretty creamy but you can taste the alcohol and it has a little tartness to it. Definitely different than a barley wine. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA May 31, 2005 Kinda has a dirt brown color, darker than amber, but it wasnt barley wine color. more mellow of a flavor and aroma than most barley wines give off, like its more earthy and sublte, still decent. hezron (600), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA May 31, 2005 Tasted around a campfire. Pine and grapefruit hoppy aroma at first, but then some dried fruit, prunes or figs or something like that. With my flashlight it looks amber-red in color with a huge head and great lacing. Flavor is mostly thin at first then a lingering dried fruit flavor shows up and just hangs around for a long time. Bad start, but a great finish. Thin palate, slightly creamy and a dry finish. Thanks to EyeDrinkAle for this one. DrnkMcDermott (1833), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA May 28, 2005 Draft, at New Holland. Brown IPA colored, light for a barleywine. Taste is kind of a sour charry, like a Flanders red, perhaps. Oddly, I get an impression of wheat, too. Nice lacing in the snifter, a little bit of a brandy smell. Not "big" in flavor or even alcohol taste, although I paid for it later. Interesting and contemplative. Still a bit young; should be great as it ages.
