Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

Burnt orange in color with a minimal off white head. wheaty aroma with hints of dark fruits. Medium bodied, and slightly sticky with flavors of spicy wheet, some dark fruit sourness, and malt sweetness, maybe a tad bit too much sweetness toward the finish. I would suspect aging would improve this some, but overall a pretty solid effort from New Holland.

From a 22 oz silk-screen printed bottle. Pours a clear copper (at least after it warms up a little). There’s not much of a head and what does form is slow to rise due to the high viscosity of the beer. There’s some banana, caramel and nuts along with a little bit of dried fruits. There’s a slightly harsh bitterness in the flavor that doesn’t sit with the rest of the flavors quite as well, although it does hide its alcohol well.

A nice winter treat. Fairly ligght for a barleywine whe poured. Very sweet filled with a fruit and citrus on the first smell. First taste will stike you a tame and sweet. Aftertaste is where the alcohol is sensed as it does come up and let its presence be known. I think this is a fine interpretation of a barleywine and would recomend this to anyone looking for a change of pace.

GABF 2006. Orange-amber body. Nose is caramel, some spice, juicy hops, and unripened fruits. Taste is more caramel, spices, sweet malts, light honey, hops, some candied fruits and light alcohol. Sort of a chewy body, some slickness and a bit of warmth after multiple samples. Ends with more fruit notes, hops, light toffee, creamy malts and spice.

Pours with an amber body topped by a thin head with some lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and flowery with lots of alcohol notes. The flavor is slighlty sweet yet sour with candy notes, a little alcohol and slight banana notes. Medium to full bodied, smooth and warming.

Clear, pale amber color with smallish off white head. Aroma has bready malts, with honey, caramel, hints of alcohol and hops. Flavor has a slightly metallic bitterness, good helping of caramel, rather sweet, with apples coming through. A nice light, sweet barleywine, a little rough in some spots, but good.

Bottle - A beautiful, deep dirty gold. Minimal white head. Surprisingly little aroma for a barleywine. Malt sweetness and musty wheat. Really interesting! I like this beer. I like the wheat in a big beer - first time I’ve had it. Very few hops in the nose or flavor, but - as I’ve said before - I love malty barleywines.
