Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

Strong alcohol and red wine notes in the aroma. Pours a clear reddish-amber, with a quickly fading off-white head. Strong alcohol notes and flavor on this one. It’s a bit hot. Full mouthfeel, but definitely a sipper. May want to pick some of these up to see if the settle down over time.

22. Screenprinted bottle, a year or two old or so at this tasting. Crystal clear dark amber. Headless. Enormously sweet nose--orangey wheat aroma that’s just ballistic. Attractive, but out of balance even after decanting a bit. Creamy, thick, sticky body. Orangey, biscuity, twangy. Way too much but oddly satisfying--for all its quirks we still finished the bottle before opening anything else.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazy orange amber color with a small ivory head. The aroma is moderately sweet with caramel malt, orange citrus, and alcohol standing out. The flavor has quite a bit of sweetness to it. There is some malt presence, but theacidic orange citrus dominates. The alcohol is present in the form of a slow burn as the liquid travels down my throat. Medium bodied, a bit sticky, and definetly on the hot side. I’m not sure how old this one is since they are now being made in bombers.

22 oz.bomber: Pours a copper-red with a minimal off-white head. Aroma is intially sweet with hints of caramel and has an alcohol presence. Flavor is sweet with hints of vanilla, caramel and a mild bourbon presence. The medium body is sticky on the mouthfeel leaving a dry alcohol taste in the finish. Enjoyable but will take you a while to drink if you got the bomber to yourself.

Bomber shared by csbosox. Pours a dark iced tea brown-orange with a frothy beige head. Boozy bourbon and sweet maltiness dominate the nose. Medium-bodied and oily-slick with a lightly dry and woody finish. Sweet caramel and a bit of dark fruit front the flavor with a warm maltiness through the middle and a woody/hoppy finish. I thought this was a pretty tasty brew. Thanks for sharing it with us, Chris.

22oz bottle. The nose is pretty much what I would expect for a barrel aged barleywine, of course it is not barrel aged. There seems to be lot of wood. A bit hot, not really all that enjoyable.
