3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
While I was saving this for a special occasion, "SCREW ALL THIS GOVERNMENTAL RED TAPE," seemed an appropriate occasion as well. Despite being adequately chilled and undisturbed, this pours with over 3/4 head, spongy and yellowish, over a light-hazed, orange-tinted-amber body. Candied, piney, bubblegum aroma, with touches of green wood behind. (I have not chewed gum of any type for many years, but this made me recall those supersweet, pink blocks of waxpaper-wrapped gum with that sugary, white residue...) Extremely UN-matched flavor to the aroma, which was at first quite off-putting. Mild honey notes to what I would call an, "extreme ESB." If I hold my breath, the flavor makes more sense, and I find lightly-sweetened, caraway rye toast. The pairings, as listed on the label, make perfect sense ("blue cheese, blackened seafood, herb-roasted poultry")... sharp, potent flavors which would "pair with" (i.e. "compare to") the sharpness of this beer. But I do not see such pairings as being "balanced" nor "complementary". Regardless: Thick, very good. Excellent?... Form your own opinions. It’s definitely worth a try at the price. ~~~~~~~~~ Vintage 2011; Bomber from Binny’s, Orland Park, IL, about 2 weeks ago.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bomber from this year’s vintage. Nose spicy with lots of booze, caramel, earth; pours deep garnet that’s starting to fade toward orange, supports a large and densely rocky beige head. Watery light-medium body with meringue beefing up the body a bit, clean with medium bitterness and significant alcohol and burn, there’s the spiciness associated with rye and goopy glucan character as well, depressing caramel with very little citrus to enliven, hops are there but not huge, just wooden and earthy. The pine is nice, though and matches well. Overall pretty standard, probably not worthy of a special release, but stands up well by itself as a sipper and against food as a base.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle (2014 edition).
Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium to dark amber.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, toasted grain), moderately hoppy (grapefruit, resin, apricot), with notes of diacetyl.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, syrupy/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Seems more alcoholic than it is. Fairly strong sourness mars the drinking experience. The aroma is fine, although pretty basic...tropical fruit and resinous hops with some caramelly malt. Average.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured into a pint glass out of a 22oz bomber.
Pours a slightly hazy medium copper with a fairly hefty one finger off-white head. Head retention is very good although lacing is lacking somewhat.
Aroma has a touch of tropical fruit mixed with some pine and earth. That telltale rye spiciness is present although it is not as up front as I was hoping. Fairly juicy all-around but a bit of a let down.
The flavor improves somewhat but I feel it is still lacking a huge hit of rye. Orange and tangerine from the hops and a nice hop juiciness. The citra really comes through. Rye spice is in the background but really lacks a punch. Nice slick mouthfeel that I was expecting and solid malt backbone but sort of boring. Bitterness is only moderate.
Overall, I was a bit let down by this beer. It honestly doesn’t seem a whole lot different from the standard mad hatter. Not really worth going out of your way for.

on draft. poured a medium to dark amber color with white head and plenty of lacing all the way down the glass. the aroma of malts and hops and the spiciness from the rye. the flavor was quite good. the medium malt base with the hops front end bitterness followed by the rye spice blends very well together. overall a solid beer that is more than drinkable.

500ml bottle, Vintage 2013. Foil wrapped. Orange amber color. Aroma of hops, caramel malts, some spicy rye. Simple body, lighter than expected. There is a definite tingle on the palate, from the rye, exactly what I was looking for. Nice toasted grain flavors. (4110)
