This stout is sheer beer poetry. Let it warm to about 45 F and pour it into a glass to fully experience its rich, roasty flavors and hints of coffee and chocolate. One glass and you’ll agree: The Poet is truly a rich, creamy brew of epic proportions.

Pint on tap at Beer Revolution in Edmonton pours almost black in color with a finger of light beige head that leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is roasted grains and chocolate. Taste is a milk chocolate sweetness with a light roasted grain bitterness. Medium bodied with modest carbonation. Overall, this is a solid stout, but there are better ones out there.

Rich and roasted well with a touch of cocoa nib and a light espresso bean. Smooth and a tad sweet with a full body and a creamy mouthfeel. Roasted and robust malt throughout with a heavy cocoa on the back end. Creamy in the middle.

Bottle pour - haven’t had this one in a long time, and surprised I haven’t rated it. Near black pour with a deep brown head that settles very quickly into a thin film with heavy effervescence. Aroma is very sweet and malty, caramel...hint of smooth roasted coffee, sweet chocolate - enticing! Flavor has a bit of a roasted malt character - lactose is evident. Good, but not ’great’. Mildly, not overpowering creamy mouthfeel. Nice drink...

Dark/black/opaque. Half-agressive pour results in a tall tan bubbly head, almost to the top of the Imperial Irish pint glass. Head recedes slowly, leaving thick lacing. Sweet, smoaky, roasted, nutty aroma. Thick, smooth feel. Taste is roasted but subdued. Sweetness & roastiness are there, but far from overpowering. Nice and smooth, but not as much roastiness as the aroma would suggest. Bitterness asserts in the middle and continues for a clean finish. An easy drinking stout, smooth and creamy.

Pours a black color with khaki head. As promised, gets better when it warms to 45 degrees

Tap at Mccormicks in Wayzata. Black with medium tan head with excellent lacing. Smells roasted and sweet. Sugary, boozy, bitter and then sweet. Good body and decent balance.

(Bottle). Better as it warms. Pours a brown-black complexion with little head and lacing. Aroma of charred malt. Flavors of toasted malt with hop balance. Thin but smooth palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. A- Chocolate, caramel, cake, subtle smoke. A- Black color, black liquid, light brown head. T-Cocoa, slightly watery, subtle smoke. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, roasty finish. O- Pretty fair but not extraordinary. A bit more roasty and smoky notes than I’d have presumed would be in here and not near as sweet. Overall it drank fine but wasn’t a wowzer.

Quoth the raven, "Nevermore." As black as the Night’s Plutonian shore, The Poet ought to be the drink of choice for mourning narrators who want only to be left with their misery over love lost but instead have to converse with ravens who insists on perching above their chamber doors. Also, this may be a good choice if you enjoy Oatmeal Stouts. Rich, velvety smooth, and bittersweet palate. Notes of dark chocolate, cream, coffee, roasted barley, and black licorice. It’s at its best when slightly warm. Another fantastic New Holland Stout.

Nice stout...not quite as good as I’d hoped, but as advertised - subtle hints of coffee and chocolate, and a nice firm malt bill. Smooth if not big bodied.
