Thanks to polomagnifico for the bottle. Dark pour bit of bubbles, white/tan coloured head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malts. Medium carbonation on the tongue, light roasted malt character towards the middle, a bit of an oaky finish with a bit of spice. Nice beer.

Bottle at Merriman Street Grill, Detroit. Pours near black with a nice tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a roasty dark molasses flavor with lots of oat, a bit of chocolate and a coffee finish. Very tasty.

Beer pours a nice black with a decent two finger off white head light tan head. The head really sticks around on this beer. The nose starts with a very nice milk chocolate, followed by some slight bitter espresso notes and roasted barley notes. There is also a nice bitter dark chocolate note as well. The beer mainly follows the nose, but the best part is the tremendous mouth feel. The beer is only 5.2% and it feels like a 10% behemoth. Excellent!

On tap at Grand Trunk, Detroit. Opaque black, beige lacing. Aroma is roasty with light berry notes. Great flavour of roasted grains, berries, and a dry finish. Medium-bodied. This one did it for me; a very nice stout.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Although not the first time drinking the Poet, it was the first time I paid attention to the details. Rather mundane aroma - nothing striking. Fruity aromas followed by a hint of chocolate. A very rich, creamy tan head poured and left nice lace on the glass as it went down. Dark and rich in color, indicative of oatmeal stouts. Hops are not overpowering, yet bitterness stands out. The carbonation comes through, but finishes crisp and clean. Overall, an enjoyable stout to drink.

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very smooth but felt a little thin on the palate to me. I prefer an oatmeal or sweet stout to finish out a bit higher gravity. Nice chocolate taste. Decent aroma.

3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz pour. Thick luscious lasting tan head with good lacing that masks much of the aroma of dark chocolate, coffee. Deep brown, not quite motor oil. Taste is thick, cream, hefty malt, dark chocolate, mild coffee, and an extremely subtle hint of booze in the finish. Mocha flavors become more apparent the warmer it gets and farther into the glass you get. Deliciously complex without overpowering and fairly filling. One of my favorite dark beers.
