COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This stout is sheer beer poetry. Let it warm to about 45 F and pour it into a glass to fully experience its rich, roasty flavors and hints of coffee and chocolate. One glass and youíll agree: The Poet is truly a rich, creamy brew of epic proportions.

Sampled at New Holland. A dark opaque stout with minimal head that disappears fast and leaves no lace. Faint coffe aroma coming through the malt aroma. Dark malty taste with chocolate undertone. Nice light hop finish. Not bad but a bit thin.

Iím guessing the poet is Edgar Allen Poe, and the bird on the label is the Raven. Iím a smart one, should try out for Jeopardy.

12oz bottle from Chipís in Kill Devil Hills. Pours darkest brown in color, just about black, with a creamy two-finger light tan head that leaves a ring. Pretty good aroma, with toasted graham cracker, roasted malt, and bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is dominated by stale graham crackers, but besides that itís a nice beer besides that. Roasty with slight dark chocolate notes. Just a little empty on the finish. Medium bodied with a rather average mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. I enjoyed it overall but probably wouldnít choose this one again.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2010 A dark pour produces a thin to moderize sized tan head. A thin layer of foam stays on top. At first the aroma seemed a bit strange. Malty, grassy, oats, nuts. After it sits in the glass I pick up coffee. Char and roasty flavors that arenít strong but linger for a bit. Coffee stronger up front with chocolate showing in the finish. Smooth oats mix in. No thrills here but decent enough.

Bottle via trade. Appearance is dark brown with a light tan head. Cocoa aroma with rich sweet chocolate. Powdery sweetness on the nose. Flavor is a dry sweet chocolate with a bitter bakers chocolate finish. Slightly watery on the finish.

Looks and smells the part, but falls short once it hits the tongue. Fairly thin and ordinary. From tap.

12oz bottle from grub.
Appearance : Deep black with a small creamy head. Light lacing.
Aroma : Coffee and grain. Light caramel with light toffee. Light chocolate.
Taste : Coffee and toffee. Thin body. Light caramel and chocolate. Finish dry and a bit mineral. Light coffee and raisins. Some grain. Finish is a bit metallic. Light fruits. Slight buttery notes appears once in a while... maybe Iím crazy.
Overall : Very light and quite drinkable. Nothing very exciting. Nice raisins on finish but a bit too mineral. Thin palate with rather soft carbonation. Nose is a bit too thin and finish too mineral/metallic. Gets less metallic with time.

12 oz. Bottle at home, poured into a pint glass. Jet black with large, creamy, tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, raisins, and plums. Body is a little thin, but strong carbonation. Flavors of coffee, cream, oak, milk chocolate. Very silky smooth middle from the oatmeal, and then finishes with very slight hop bitterness and more dark fruit. Kind of simple and a little too thin on the palate. Slightly watery feeling. Average.

Got this in a mix 12-pack and this was the only notes I wrote down: Nice and creamy mouthfeel, bitter malt flavor.

I was not impressed with this stout. Kind of thin and bland. I would not buy again.
