Chestnut brown, opaque. Milk chocolate nose with light alcohol and toasty hops. Rather bitter, with some toasty, chocolate malts. Fun stuff. A bit boozy...but a tasty finish.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at the brewpub. Rich dark fruit aroma. Near opaque brown color with a lightly lacing tan head. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Very sweet dark fruit flavor (pruney) with roasted malt and arguably some floral hop. It is, perhaps, a near equivalent of Old Peculier.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2010-07-01. Hazy brown body with modest beige head. 3+ Flavour starts malty with a good dose of bitterness in the finish, touch muddled (or is it just me?), bitterness grows as the glass goes on. 6+ Modest aroma, malty with light hop character. 6+ Average plus palate. Decent, but the overall mix of the flavours doesn’t quite come together for me today. 2008 Vintage on the sign, 2009 in the Festival Guide, On tap at Seattle International Beer Festival

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sampled at Toronado 2009 Barleywine Festival.
Pours deep amber with copper edges and tan head. The aroma is a mix of figs, prunes and dates to go along with aged chewy malts and faint wood. Good nose yet a bit modest in strength. Very nice taste that will yield increased goodness with more age. I get musty dusty dates, yams, figs and prunes. Before midway the barrel notes rise up with bourbon, vanilla and oak adding to the complexity. Well balanced flavors that demand additional quaffings. I could sip this all day/night.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the Horse Brass. This is a big, bold barleywine meant to drink fresh. Pours dark brown with a thick, creamy, dark tan head. Big roasty, toasty, resiny, piney nose. Thick, chewy, creamy body. The nuts, toast, roast, dark malts, dark pitted tree fruits, and sharply resiny hop all work together across a dense and satisfying mid-palate. Nothing too sharp about the hops; they’re not there to age for years; they’re there to enjoy now. It’s a big and very intense PNW style barleywine that would probably age in some interesting ways, but really feels good to go right now, today. Hides the 11% incredibly well.
