Originally brewed by ale breweries to compete with the surging popularity of lager beer, it remains a regional specialty in the Northeast United States. Our version is light-bodied and pale straw color, but uses no corn or rice as many of the original versions did. The result is a supremely malty and refreshing version of a style dear to our hearts

My first from this brewery, located in New York State’s most crime-ridden town. And it is a nice one. The can is colorful and cute. The head sizzles nicely on a dark gold pour. The aroma is pleasantly sweet. I was expecting that slightly cheap, sweet taste that some cream ales have. But no - this is smooth but still tastes like real beer, with a pleasantly bitter edge. Very nice.

Location: 16 oz can from Sparrow, 2/9/15

Aroma: The nose is pretty standard, with some sweet, cereal, and grainy malts
Appearance: Pours a clear orange-gold color with a small ring of head and light, spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is all about the same malt bill, grains and cereal, fairly sweet, mild bitterness
Palate: Light bodied, not watery, with a lively carbonation, a clean feel, and a lightly dry finish
Overall Impression: You can’t help but enjoy this drinkable beer, even if it isn’t all that exciting. It works quite well in this style. I’m always happy to have a flavorful, drinkable, low alcohol beer, and this is one. Looking forward to drinking cans of this more often now that is has made its way in Jersey.

The cream ale is a really underappreciated style. Probably because most breweries opt to make a lager-tasting beer as a cream ale. But when you find one that’s really refined, like Newburgh Cream Ale, it’s a special treat. This is an all-malt brew (which would seem to defy style categories, but whatever). It definitely has a classic cream ale palette and is definitely one of the better examples of the style I can recall.

I poured a 16oz can into a mug. There was no freshness date and it cost $3.30 ($0.21 per ounce).

Appearance: Dark golden/light copper cue. Slightly cloudy, but otherwise transparent with carbonation visible. Pours to a small, white, foamy head which laces and retains fairly well.

Smell: Sweet specialty malt, candy, and lemony hops. Has that distinct cream ale aroma.

Taste: “Grainy” is a term beer reviews (and regular drinkers) tend to use as a derogatory description. But in the case of Newburgh Cream Ale, it truly is a grainy-tasting beer. There’s a lot of traditional pale malt flavor plus a lot of distinct specialty malt sweetness. Distinct notes of butterscotch and caramel as well as the authentic cereal-like grain flavor. Though only 30 IBUs, there’s a distinct bitterness and true hop presence here. Lemony is the most dominate characteristic – not quite citrusy, more of lemonpeel or zest. Maybe even a hint of witbier-like coriander or other spice. And yet, this beer has that “je sais se quois” cream ale distinction. A great beer to have available in cans.

Drinkability: This is exactly the kind of brew that lends itself to being in a 16oz can. Newburgh Cream Ale is light in the mouth, but still plenty flavorful. It finishes clean and is refreshing across the tongue. And at only 4.2% ABV it’s got a surprising amount of taste for such a light brew. Bring a cooler full of these to Saratoga Race Course next summer.

Tap at brewery. Pours fine gold with nose of grains and hop. Pretty hoppy for cream ale, light biscuits, grains, and grass. Smooth fresh and very drinkable.

2014-08-16. Crisp dark yellow body with a small white head. 3+ Aroma of floral hops over mild pale malt. Flavour is similar floral hop character over a moderate pale malt core. On the sweet side. Average bodied palate, light carbonation. Growler at Campground Brewdown

Slight malty and yeasty aroma. Pretty light in color and flavor. Bit of a lager funk finish. Not a bad beer for a light drinkable beer for the masses, but not something I would seek out. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
