Ughsmash (3979), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 7, 2009 Bottled. Poured clear, medium reddish-brown with a short-lived cap of white head. The aroma opened with notes of skunk, followed by sweet caramel and nutty sugars.. warmth brought out some brown sugar and vanilla.. the skunk never did go away, though. The flavor had sweet, tacky caramel and vanilla at the core with a quick hit of spicy earth and a whole lot more sweetness on the edges.. finished dry with nutty notes and skunk. Lighter-bodied and very sweet on the palate with high, prickly carbonation.. went down easily, but too sweet, and the clear bottle didn’t help. AGAquino (73), San Juan, Puerto Rico Jul 6, 2009 on tap at the Jet Rock in the PHL airport, feeling nostalgia for this beer, but now realize there so many better. meisterbrauMHB (53), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 5, 2009 Pours a medium brown with honey like hue. Good aroma. Had a slight citrus taste and ended slightly bitter. Pretty good balance, although not the best brown ale I have had. dalek123 (103), Houston, Texas, USA Jul 4, 2009 Pours dark brown with a pillowy offwhite head. Taste is sweet and malty. Body is thin. This is smooth drinking if you’re a fan of the style. danielst (131), Vienna, Austria Jul 3, 2009 I had this from a 55cl bottle. Pours a dark brown colour with a red hue. The beer has a rather herbal, toffee-ish aroma with a little bit of candies, esters and metal. Flavours of tobacco, again that damn metal and pleasant caramel in the finish and aftertaste. Good hoppy balance. The mouthfeel is thin which adds up to its drinkability besides the mild carbonation. Still this is watery, especially in the finish, and therefore not utterly enjoyable to me - got better with increasing temperature though. Chimpy5 (19), Iowa, USA Jun 29, 2009 This beer was always my favorite when I first started drinking, and I still surprisingly enjoy it to this day. Its a pretty solid brown ale that is perfect for drinking at anytime. It is a little thin, but still has a decent amount of kick in the sweet malt flavor. Its not the most classy beer out there, but it’ll definitely never get old for me. mcdav2154 (289), Germany Jun 27, 2009 1 pint bottle. brown body, big tan head that left too quickly. no lacing. Smell was a little suprising. I had to go to my wifes baking cabinet to know it. It actually smelt like pure vanilla. Taste a bit like buttered bread. Descent hop balance. Pretty good beer. jesperhammer (260), Copenhagen, Denmark Jun 27, 2009 27-JUN-2009.
Can @home.
Longa ago, long before I started enjoying high quality beer, when I prefered wine over beer, because the only interesting beers on the danish scene was Carlsberg and Tuborg pilsner, suddenly I stumbled over this beer in England, and enjoyed it very much.
Since then I often bought it in Denmark (from can), and drank it when I wanted something for the thirst. It was really a favorite, but now I have had so many high quality beers since then, and I wonder what will happen, when I open one. So here it goes:
I pours very light brown with a nice almost white head though. It is actually too light in colour for a brown ale in my book.
Some malty notes on the nose, and the same on tasting it. No bitterness at all.
It is not creamy at all. Mostly just watery.
So how was it compared to back then?
Not bad actually. I can still drink this, and I still prefer this by a mile compared to Tuborg or Carlsberg pilsner. BUT it is not a brown ale to remember. Thinking of Rogue, Mikkeller and many others this is really watery.
Conclusion: I will rebuy. A few cans in the sun is still a pleasure.
