spikester (602), Salem, Oregon, USA Jan 17, 2008 Updated: Jan 25, 2009From a clear glass bottle, slightly more than a pint. Slight skunky aroma (from clear bottle?). Poured into a clear glass 12 ounce tumbler. Virtually no head. No lacing either. Fairly low carbonation but what was there kept bubbling. Nice roasted malt with smooth hops not detected on first sip. Most macro drinkers would think this had gone flat. I like brews with low carbonation. Rated lower than would have due to the skunk factor. The bottle has raised lettering on it proclaiming "the one and only" , cool bottle might keep it around.
The back label has a little history and it won an international brewery award in 1928! That was a long time ago. I suspect this is brewed using extracts. Very smooth, good flavors, but not a top shelf brown ale. Look forward to trying it on tap sometime.
I would recommend the brewery switch to brown bottles ASAP to eliminate the skunk effect.
Update: Tried it from a can a few times with these improvements. Nice head some lacings and no skunk! afireinside96 (807), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 16, 2008 Updated: Dec 23, 2008served at the proper temperature this ale is a delight for the taste buds.smooth and mild, slightly sweet. this beer really hides its personality if chilled too much though. bassbuckeye (81), Ohio, USA Jan 15, 2008 Malty nutty flavor. This is my watching football beer. Its good when its cold and I can drink alot of them. scoobysnak (249), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Jan 14, 2008 A good standby brown ale. Widely distributed and easy to find. I usually get this when I go to some low brau bar with only the big three on tap. gam (1068), brisbane, Australia Jan 13, 2008 Like this old favourite, pours nice brown colour, walnut or similar nut flavour, malt so fresh.a smooth nutty flav malt the background but not strong flavours but a pleasant ale alround. darkguardian (506), Florida, USA Jan 13, 2008 Newcastle is right up there with my favorites of the commonly found beers. Some bitterness, with a strong lasting sweetness. Very drinkable. But avoid the bottles at all cost, if not served cold it tastes and smells terrible. Very good from the tap. moseslikesbeer (183), conestoga, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 10, 2008 Updated: Jan 14, 2008bottle. not a lot of head and I really didn’t notice an aroma at all. this beer looks great with a redish brown color. It’s kind of a malt/light wine mix. this beer is very smooth and I could drink a lot of these at one time. funkadelik (3), USA does not count Jan 7, 2008 [Bottle] The aroma is quite sensitive to temperature. Must stay cold to keep the skunky smell away. Caramel brown with a light white head that sustains throughout(stains the glass). Amazing overall taste and smoothness. One of my first and favorite ales. Preferred on tap, but the bottle is pretty darn good!
