Dynamic, articulate, perceptive, couragoues, outspoken, just a few of the adjectives that inadequately describe...NEWCASTLE!

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
A beautiful amber color pours out with a very enduring slightly off white head. The aroma, however, is not exactly inviting. Smells bready like a lager, maybe like a Hawaiian roll. Maltiness is evident on the aroma but not at a caramel level like other brown ales. The taste is not bitter at all but not sweet either. Very much flavorless and not much character here. Very highly carbonated beer. The body is light and there is nothing intense at all about this, except maybe the carbonation. It’s almost like drinking a pale lager with an amber color. Not much flavor here.

Odd bready and slightly nutty taste, almost as if they simply fermented a loaf of pre-sliced bread. In a way this is sort of interesting although it really doesn’t taste all that great. Aroma is unremarkable. Palate is pretty weak and watery overall and the carbonation is weak too. Still, I could drink this every once in a while; it has a certain charm to it and it’s kind of nice to see a macrobrew that isn’t a lager.

Drunk from a can so no comment on appearance. Aroma is is a little malty, and some caramel. Has hints of metallic brewing, but generally very drinkable. No real aftertaste but some sweetness in the body.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Not bad. Not great. Tried this at The Patio restaurant. A bit surprised they carried this.
Appearance: Clear bottle made me suspect of how well it held up being “imported from England” but the distinctive yellow and crimson label with the big blue star is eye catching and inviting. The beer itself looks a bit more like soda than beer. The color is dark, chocolaty with definite deep red base though when nearly finished it had the color and translucence of bourbon. Head was creamy, inviting with decent retention.
Smell: It was difficult for me to pick out distinctive aroma in my serving of this barley and wheat brew though there was a definite ever so slightly sweet maltiness.
Taste & Notes: First wash over the tongue was pleasing and invigorating with a nice bit of bite. These types of ale promise to be sweeter though mine was not at all, more fizzy overall with no real after taste except for a slight bitterness. Though to say it had no body would be unfair, it definitely lacked fullness for me. Some reviews speak to a buttery character but my serving did not exhibit this. Probably more a bit dry, roasty toward the end.
Mouthfeel: Thin and soda-like.
Drinkability: Though not a great offering in my very humble opinion but solidly drinkable after a hard day’s work. However, it did not go well with typical fried appetizers but I’m thinking could add some nice dimension to fall/winter soups or stews. It may also cut greasiness of dishes such as roast pork.

Out of the small keg on the fourth. Aroma is malty malts with some cardboard funk. Pours light brown with a nice small frothy head. Taste was malt forward with fresh grains, cardboard, and notes of toffee. Very dependable and drinkable.

Newcastle Brown Ale: ok- (Gal liked it better then I did)
Bottle, 330ml. Pours clear, dark brown. Tall, dense and foamy, beige colored head. Mild aroma of malt and dry fruits with roasted notes. Mouth feel is watery with medium-gentle carbonation. Weak tanginess. Taste is bitter-forward, with a weak balancing background sweetness. Strong flavors of bitter hops and malt. Some noticeable bitter roasted notes, bitter-sweet caramel and burnt sugar. Also some fruits/dry fruits flavors and weak notes of coffee. Somewhat watery. Bitter aftertaste.
Nicely bitter, strongly roasted, with a precise, very gentle background sweetness. Slightly flat and somewhat boring in terms of flavor, not much of flavor development. Easy to drink, and yet slightly heavy and warming, fits a colder weather. This is not a beer to drink slowly, but rather more of an everyday drink.
