"Formidable Beast". What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!

The aroma of this has a berry twist to it. It tastes a lot like the Browne Ale with a kick of berry malt in it. Would definitely have this beer again. Newcastle Werewolf is quite good.

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear copper with a foamy beige head. Aroma is mixed chocolate and rye spice notes. Med body, but then it thins quite rapidly. It’s ok. But not very bitter. It is dry, and arguably hoppy. Somehow it’s just not super.

Bottle 0,33l. Pours a clear dark amber color with a small head and with a small lacing. Aroma is fairly mild with some malt, caramel and hint of fruit fruit. Taste of malt and caramel sweetness, with just a bit of fruit, smoke and nut. Moderate body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle bought at Nina’s Mini Market. Spotty lacing from an off-white head with satisfying duration. Clear dark brown body. Malt dominated nose, hints of berries. Black and brown malts to the flavour character, with a mild taste of caramel. Slightly roasted bitter aftertaste. Easy to drink. Accepted (hotel room, Edinburgh 11.08.2013).

Bottled. Clear, deep-red copper with moderate off-white head. I can smell mildly spicy rye notes in the aroma. Body is a little on the weak side. Flavor isn’t bad, but somewhat one-dimensional. Something in the finish I don’t care much for although I honestly can’t place it. Not terrible, but I won’t be getting it again.

Pours a clear amber brown with a big full antique lace head. Aroma is grain and spice. Taste is sweet caramel malt, a bit of molasses and biscuits. Mild hoppiness at the end. Good session ale.

35.5 cl bottle from Meny Kolsås. I had some expextations with this one but it was a bit dissapointing. Pours brown with a medium beige head.Aroma and taste is plain caramel and toffee. Where is the rye ? Medium to low bitter finish.

Sample from bottle at Vectura tasting. Brown colour. Some caramel and toffee in the aroma, not unpleasant. The flavour has also caramel and toffee, but also some moderately roasty notes. A moderate but sharpish and slightly metallic bitterness in the finish. Drinkable (if for free), but not something I’d spend money on.
