COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Formidable Beast". What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!

10oz pour on tap at Cock & Bull. Clear red / brown color. Thin white head, some lace. Smooth texture. Some light earthy hop, light spice aroma, little skunky adjuct flavors. Light bitter, light sweet. Caramel malts. Light chocolate. OK... Better than standard New Castle brown, but I still don’t care for this

Bottle served in a Newcastle NBA pint glass: Deep amber hue with a lovely off-white head and sticky almost nitro lacing... it went downhill from there. The aroma has notes stale caramel malts, soap, oxidized hop extract, and some minerals and wet burlap bags. The taste was not any better, dull and lifeless with a strange twang that is borderline infected. Where in the hell is the rye? A toothless creacher this is. UTTER GARBAGE!

Reddish amber color, clear, medium head recedes mediumly. Sweet bread aroma, nuts. Sweet nutty flavor up front, kind of light lager in the middle, and a somewhat surprising bitter tobacco finish. Lots of things going on, none of them particularly pleasant but also not overwhelmingly bad. Blah.

UPDATED: SEP 10, 2013 Clear reddish brown pour significant head. Robust earthy and peanuty flavors, some berry, but not sweet. Great bitter dry finish. As a non Newcastle Brown fan I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the beer. Somewhat watery mouthfeel but definitely a tasty beer with food. I would drink it all night long.

Reddish amber color with a big, fluffy off white head. LIght cereal grain nose. Tastey beer with some puffed wheat notes, wet grains and an apple/berry fruitiness. Nice seasonally packaged beer.

12 oz bottle Reddish mahogany color with a very durable tan head that leaves a nice coat on the glass when tilted: Not “blood red” but still a fine looking pour. A rather earthy and slightly musty aroma, suggestive of dark breads, is a somewhat poor preview of the flavor. Tasting reveals a clear presence of some earthy hops, but these are also spicy and overlay a solid, roasted malt base with some nice rye flavor. Decent aftertaste with a lingering notes of spicy rye and dark roasted malts.Overly aggressive carbonation. Medium body. Semi-dry finish O: good session beer: it has some complexity, no annoying off-flavors, decent mouthfeel, limited ABV, and relatively low price. The most interesting and appealing Newcastle beer in my experience.

Bottle. Toffee, barley, and rye aroma. Medium brown with off-white head. Lightly sweet toffee malt and hay flavor. Light body. Okay but not much there.

Bottle. Poured a smaller red color with a tiny off white head. Aroma was biscuits, metallic notes, and malts. Flavor was copper, bread and yeast. Mild bitters in the finish. Not a lot to this beer. Average at best.

On tap at Old Chicago Westminster poured a clear reddish amber with a small lingering ambe head. Aromas of carmel, toffee, fruittiness and light spice. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel, toffee, earthiness, light fruittiness and a hint of spiuce with a crisp dry lingering toffee finish.

Pours honey brown. Smells like weak apple juice. Taste is more of the same. Too sweet.
