"Formidable Beast". What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!

Decent Lacing. Lightly Toasted, Faint Chocolate Aroma. Taste about the same: Toasted Malt, Rye, Light Chocolate Notes, Light Bitter. Although there Is Nothing Too Exciting, It Is Better Than Expected. Decent...

Bottle. Pours amber and brownly color with one-finger white head. Aroma is quite unusual. Smokey, metalic rye, light brown sugar, roastet malt, caramel, ash and earthly sense. Flavor follows the nose, mostly roasted malt and berries. Fairly light bitterness, balanced carbonation and drying finish. Thin body though.

Aroma Is rye, toasted malt, caramel. Dark brown color. Small white head. Taste is a little bit off ash with other flavors in aroma. Thin beer, refreshing; little carbonation. I see the marks state mot so high for thus, but I kind of like it.

Appearance: clear reddish brown, with a short, creamy near white head. Aroma: light brown sugar, some spicy rye and medium floral hop character. Taste: sweet, slightly nutty, with a bit of a peppery bite. Finish: lingering toast, pepper, slightly dry. Notes: Actually not terrible. The rye gives a nice, slightly peppery bite to mitigate the nutty sweetness. Probably as good as the standard Newcastle Brown, although this is hardly a proper bitter.

Appearance: Clear dark wood with mahogany highlights under a thin light khaki head which disappears into a thin bubbly collar.
Nose: In a word: weird. Red vermouth and tannic oxidized red wines. Soggy wet cardboard. Fruitcake turned sour in the back.
Palate: Thin watery stale vermouth. Soured fermented apple skins in the middle are also dry and tannic. Sweaty soggy cardboard in the back. Wood varnish and wood polish underneath which in realization is kind of what the beer looks like in my glass. Rotted bitter orange rind.
Final Thoughts: The only thing I can surmise from reading other reviews of this beer is that the bottle I tried was old/oxidized/stale/skunked. If I can get my hands on a fresh bottle, I will happily try the beer again.

01.12.2013. 0,33l Bottle. Ica Karmsundgata. Dark amber colour with off-white head. Aroma of dark malts with rather strong bitter hopping. Its also soft and crisp with godd bitterness and some weak malty sweetness. Godd beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
