COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Formidable Beast". What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!

Bottle. Pours a clear red color with a medium sized bubbly off-white head. Aroma of malt and caramel. Taste is of malt, caramel, rye, spices with a hint of bread and hops. Very sweet but with a bitter finish. The rye comes in clearly in the aftertaste. Medium body and carbonation. A bit boring, but at least it doesn’t taste like dishwashing fluid like their Brown Ale.

Beergaard (156) - Aarhus, DENMARK - MAY 6, 2014
White head and constant flow of bubbles to the top. Redish brown color, but not as red as promised on the bottle. Strong aroma of iron when first opened, afterwars some malt and fruitiness. Very watery taste but with notes of iron, malt and a touch of syrup. Quite distinct bitterness in the end - which is by far the most possitive thing i have to say about this beer. - Tastes better with food than alone

OleR (4804) - Oslo, NORWAY - APR 18, 2014
Clear brown with a reddish tint. Mostly lasting big-bubbled beige head. Anise-scented caramel malts to the nose. Light body, chalky mouthfeel. Light bready and caramelly malt flavor. Light sweet. Discreet bitterness, some earth and spice. Short sourish malty ending. Quite good for a pasteurized and filtered Bitter. [Picked up at Meny Oslo City]

Either this one has a quite peculiar aroma, or it’s not a good idea to take a puff of Otrivin Mentol right before the tasting. In either case, what my confused nose detects are fermented grapes and white wine, sweet fruits, caramel and hints of berries in the back. In the glass it’s nowhere near blood red as is claimed on the label, it’s more of a medium amber colour (but it’s still good-looking). The clear body is topped by a short-lived, off-white head that laces the glass well. The flavour is moderate and a bit less complex than the aroma: fruits, caramel and spicy hints. The taste is light to moderate sweet and light bitter. Fairly dry, light plus body and moderate carbonation. The initial sips felt a bit metallic, but I’ll blame that on the Otrivin.
[33 cl bottle, enjoyed 3 months before BB date, from Meny Oslo City, Oslo]

Sample at Malmö beer and whiskey festival. Ridiculous, they should stick to making their brown beer.
