"Formidable Beast". What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!

This is a decent beer, though it might just be too bitter for most people. I enjoyed it, but I think I prefer Newcastle Brown Ale still.

Superb foam that will last a while. Lovely inviting aroma of dark toffee. The flavor is malt characterized by dark caramel, roasted malt, a little hazelnut and candied. Oatmeal, I do not have the big expertise, but the taste of a little bread must be due to oatmeal. It just contributes to a little more distinctive and aggressive malt flavor that makes this ale to taste something richer than the 4.5% alcohol else had put in expectation. Hop bitterness is moderate and restrained, just such as an ESB should be. The finish is medium dry and very low carbonation is completely in line with how the British ales should be.

A rather odd one that goes from an odd oatmeal stout to caramel. It swings from bitter to sweet in a form that feels very imbalnced.

Type: 12-oz. bottle Glass: Stone Ruination IPA pint glass From: Albertsons in Alpine, Calif. Price: $1.67 ($9.99 for a mix 6-pack) Purchased: Jan. 2, 2015 Consumed: Jan. 3, 2015 Misc.: N/A Poured an auburn, clear color with 1-to-2 fingers of off-white head. A few bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Minimal lacing on the sides. Minimal retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.13) Definitely a Newcastle beer with the first whiff. Rye malts, toffee, caramel, nuts, roasty, butter malts, hazelnut, light espresso, vanilla and mixed berries. (Smell - 2.63) Tasted a tad better than the nose. More berries than the nose. Buttery toffee, slightly boozy, hazelnut, caramel, nutty roasty malts and faint vanilla. (Taste - 2.88) Medium body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, rather bitter finish. (Feel - 2.63) Not a good Irish Red Ale, especially after having Alpine’s McIlhenney’s Irish Red the other night. Would not have it again. (Overall - 2.75) 2.79 65 C
