3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 Jimthechap (1206) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - APR 6, 2013
I have to say that it didn’t appear particularly blood red, however, I do appreciate the use of rye. The aroma was mellow and somewhat subdued (due mainly to the serving temperature) but with a signature ESB hopping. This was manifest in a slightly sweet body with good creamy mouthfeel. A bit of a novelty to find on tap in New Zealand, but I’ll take it.

A decent bitter
1 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 3/20 wildbeercat (136) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - MAR 31, 2013
12 fl oz / 355mL bottle into pint glass.
Aroma: Yeast. Wonder Bread. Paper. Not appealing.
Appearance: The bottle says "Blood Red Ale". However, the ale is beer-bottle brown with a very very light tan, thin head.
Taste: Stale, sour bread. Slight metallic twinge. The bottle mentions sweet berry fruit and rye malt. I guess that sourness and bread-y-ness comes from the rye, but I’m not getting any fruit at all, and especially not berries.
Palate: Thin and fizzy.
Overall: Reading the description on the six pack and on the bottles, I was expecting so much more. This was a huge let down. Not very good, and the descriptions on the packaging is deceiving.

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Heathen (1386) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - FEB 22, 2013
THOUGHTS: Very malty. I didn’t love the flavors, but it was a wonderful study of malt. Sharp hops then took a bite to balance the malt, but the hops were more distracting than complimentary to the wonderful malty start. It might make a great session beer for someone — just not me.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a crystal clear, dark reddish, amber that was nearly cola or birch beer like. It also had an average, off-white head. The aroma had heavy dark bread, toasted and nutty malts, caramel, milk chocolate, rye and candy; light herbal hops; cola; hints of licorice; and a little undetermined fruitiness. The initial flavor was great and moderately sweet, and bitter; while the finish was just OK and moderately sweet and heavily bitter. There was caramel, rye, dark bread, toasty and nutty malts, slight milk chocolate, candy, herbal hops, metallic hops, more metallic hops, slight citrus hops and cola. The medium body was sort of creamy, but a little sticky on the lips with fizzy carbonation and a metallic and dry finish.
