4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Dickinsonbeer (5077) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - AUG 30, 2007
Shared with Hophead and brought by some dude at Yankee Spirits! This was at the BBD 07. This beer held up surprisingly well even for a 7 year old barleywine. Pours a mostly clear deep amber almost brown with a thin lasting head and some spotty lace. Aroma has way less oxidation than expected- only slight papery and fruity notes. Tons of smooth toasty and caramel malts and lots of dried dark fruits, toffee and some maple syrup hints- light honey sweetness in the end. Medium and dark caramel malt sweetness, raisin, brown sugar, and hints of oak-aged rum, more maple, and hints of tobacco. Full body, and smooth as hell. This beer is still amazing and could probably hold up for a while to come. I almost couldnt beleive my eyes when I saw this guy pull out this beer, and even more surprised when no on seemed to know or care what it was. After my first pour, there was still a bunch left, so I poured a bit more. Kickass barleywine!
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 hophead75 (2005) - Largo, Florida, USA - AUG 27, 2007
This ultra-rare bottle was shared by one of the Yankee Spirits beer managers at BBD 07. Hazy brown in color with almost no head. Got huge notes of caramel, fruit, and sherry in the aroma. Fruits were raisins/plums and apples. Caramel malts were oxidized, in a good way. Taste- very rich with tons of caramel, raisins, and apples. This was very smooth overall and aged incredibly well. Nice, syrupy full body that finishes with lingering fruit and a caramel sweetness across the tongue. Definitely lives up to it’s reputation.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 pineypower (1735) - Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA - MAR 1, 2007
UPDATED: DEC 7, 2008 Ok, so I had to go for it happy b-day to me. Poured out a dark, cloudy brown with thin lacing white head. The aroma is very complex, raisin, dark fruit and slight port. The palate is excellent, perfect. The taste is extremely complex and multi-leveled, I’ve had some very good scotches that haven’t been this complex. Dark fruit, figs, brown sugar and raisin give way to sweet malt, plum and a touch of earthy flavors. The finish is of some port with a slight alcohol taste. Very drinkable for the alcohol content. I almost wish I could have waited longer, but I had to go for it. This beer is truly world class, and its a shame it will never be brewed again. Impressive
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheBeerGod (3960) - Newport News, Virginia, USA - DEC 31, 2006
Bottled obtained in trade with desurfer (at the time named risurfer). Vintage is 2000, obviously. Muddy coppery brown pour to this and the head is faded tan froth. Nose is big dark fruits, brown sugar, caramel, sweet malts, rum cake, and hints of port. Taste is more fruit notes (raisins, figs, plums), sweet chewy malts, brown sugar, chewy caramel, light toffee, and subtle alcohol notes. At times this reminds me of the Westvleteren 12 I drank earlier today. Body is slick and creamy with light warmth and a light-medium overall feel. Finishes with more dark fruits (black cherries, raisins and figs), caramel, sweet malts, rum cake, brown sugar and light alcohol. Nice!
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 TheBeerLover (1019) - DC Metro Area, USA - JAN 25, 2006
Newport Storm 00 pours to a deep brown color with a slight white head, and a soft carbonation. When held to the light, this beer is really a brilliant, deep amber color. The nose on this beer is very impressive. VERY fruity, estery aromas of plum, pear, and pineapple marry with a touch of sweet malt aroma. The palate is a lean malt backbone with a nice back drop of crisp, biscuit malt, sweet malt, and chocolate malt flavors. I was surprised how thin this beer was, but this is not a major criticism. I would have liked this beer to be a little less attenuated, and to have a bigger body, but make no mistake, there is plenty of character and flavor in this beer. As with the nose, ripe, fruity, estery flavors grab hold of the tongue. I picked up more flavors of plum, and pear, along with a touch of yeasty flavor as well. Newport Storm 00 finishes with more fruity flavor paired with chocolate and sweet malt character up front. It is balanced with some nice hop character, and a slightly warming burn. This beer is DANGEROUSLY drinkable, you would never guess from its lean, smooth body, and fruity flavors, that this beer is 11.5% abv.
This beer followed no stylistic guidelines, it was brewed with quality ingredients, and this recipe will not be used again, making 00 a very rare and unique beer. It is packaged in a beautiful cobalt blue, corked 750ml bottle, very appealing to the eye. This beer was delicious and very well done. It was a pleasure to ring in the New Year with this beer. This is a strong beer that could be laid down for a few years, and will improve with age. I believe in a few years, some of those big, fruity, estery flavors and aromas will fade, and more of the malt character and alcoholic strength, will come through. This is an excellent sipping brew. I would match this beer with strong and sharp cheeses, desert, or enjoy by itself.
4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Cletus (6025) - Connecticut, USA - JAN 8, 2006
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2006 Pours copper with an almost non-existent white head (scattered bubbles at the surface and little more). Smells of oak, scotch, orange peels, dough, and oily (best way to describe it). Taste is very complex with lots of fruit and cognac like qualities. This has definitely stood the test of time. Buttery warming alcohol mouthfeel with a lasting butterscotch like finish.

I fell in love as soon as I poured this in my glass. This is the deep down dark chocolate brown color I look for in a polyester suit and a barley wine such as this . Impeccable taste, just...umm....phenomenal!
